Having two filters is always a good idea on a tank. First you get double filtration, second you have a backup just in case the first one goes out. It's a win-win.

This is a 55G tank, and all you have for filtration is an AC30?

Well depends on the size of the tank? I like to have my filtration rated for twice (or more) my tank size. So I have a 75 gallon I want to try to get each filters rated for 150 gallons. It may be overkill but if one filter fails I am sure the other can run until the other is repaired without compromising tank parameters.

If your tank is a bigger one you can go canister and HOB, if its smaller you can go two HOB, or one HOB and one internal (power or sponge).

For canister filters I prefer the Eheim classics (2211, 2213, 2215, 2217), just because it comes with all the media you need and the design is smart-in one end/out the other. Its also the only brand that will rate their filters full so the gph you see is what you get (on a clean unit).

For HOB, I prefer the Aqueon Quiet Flows. IME they are more dependable and have a longer time between cleanings than the Aqua Clears. I just modify the Aqueons so they run like the Aquaclears, I ditch the carbon/floss sleeve and fill it with bacterial media and use a filter floss for the mechanical filtration. Carbon is not needed.

Another new brand that is similar to Aquaclear is Seachem's new Tidal filters made by Sicce.

I use sponge filters in many tanks and really like the Hikkari brand, the sponge is very porous and fine and allows a lot of room for bacteria to grow.

If not I also have a couple of these Azoo brand sponge filters and they work very well also.

I don't use mechanical internal filters, but have seen the Marineland Magnum internal canister filters in use at the fish expos and was impressed with their design and power.

***so sorry -not sure why some of the internet photos are so in-your-face HUGE, but you can see the sponge pores close up.

You need to add a lot more filtration to the tank. I would recommend the Eheim 2215 (rated for tanks up to 95 gallons), and keep the Aquaclear going. Or another HOB filter rated for at least 75 gallons to run along with that Aquaclear.
