For a 2.5g tank, consider this filter - comes with 2 sponges but there is room to also add some biomedia, which is what I did to mine.

I was wondering about the flow, my AC30 on my 10G provides plenty.

Have you tested your water params lately?...how was the tank cycled?

You can get rid of the carbon, but DO NOT change out the cartridges until you get a new filter, or you will lose your cycle.

HOB filters should be cleaned once a month, but you don't clean the media.

    Why the low water level?

I test my water every water change, this tank has been 0s on ammonia and nitrites since it completed cycling in February and nitrates at last water change were about 20ppm. This tank was a bummer to cycle and took about 9 weeks to fully get there. All I did was fill it and wait. I added no source of ammonia except a single blood worm once a week.

That pic was from when I first added live plants to the tank which I did after I vacuumed my gravel. I just hadn't refilled it yet.

    Did you add water conditioner?
What kind of test kit do you use?
