I think I remember this tank giving you lots of headaches in the beginning. But what a colorful, active display you've achieved in the end. It's beautiful and perfect for its audience. Personally, I prefer stable...with just a little room maybe for something new from time to time.

Thanks, everybody. Slap, it might be a nice gesture, but I do get paid for it, too. Which is pretty cool.

I like about an inch of dirt capped with an inch or two of sand. I find it's only when they get mixed together that that things harden up. Do you find that to be the case?

It could be. I have experienced it hardens up over time. Probably also because it settles and just sits there. Disturbing the bottom regularly should prevent that from happening. Remember sand is fine and compacts easily.
In the construction trade, when you pave you would normally use a compactor to firm up the sand. However you can use water for the same purpose as it gets all the air out. This is more or less what happens with sand especially when it mixes with the gravel as it fills in all the holes.

It is still a good idea to use sand and gravel mix, I have done it in most of my tanks, especially for planted tanks.

The tanks turned out great! The whole tank is very active too, the rainbows are striking with all of their vibrant colors.
Agree with Matt, great you are providing a source of relaxation & entertainment and get some $ out of it.

Also agree with Sue, I do like stable with something new thrown in every so often, lol.
