What a great opportunity for you Tom ;-)

I agree with "the Rock" on his stocking suggestions; with the little bit larger fish, "less can be more". I just like a couple of different combo's is all.

I would go with 8 trifasciata, 12-14 boesemani and the 10 gold barbs.

For a bottom dweller and staying with your loach idea; a school of Botia striata, the Zebra loach, get about 4" so a school of 8-10 would look sharp and for a loach they are pretty peaceful especially kept in a group of this size. SueD is spot on about the BP's, besides the amount of waste 10 would produce, if you really want them you could get 4 and they probably won't be seen that much anyway as she stated. I would stay away from the Synodontis also.

Test the water as suggested and see what works the best, but most of all....have fun

Great advice, everybody. Thanks. The four different kinds of rainbows were largely based on Amazon Joe's experience in his rainbow tank, where all the different sorts school and swirl together like one happy family. I think that looks very cool.

Ok, ixne on the big loaches and syns. Will look into zebra loaches or green cories. I didn't know that bristlenose would fight. Two spot cats would be cool, but they're really hard to find, so that might not work.

I'm headed over this afternoon to talk with them. Test source water hardness, water sources for changes, the possibility of a small space for a QT tank, and specifics on heaters/other equipment are all on the agenda. I'm going to try to steer them away from the "three gigantic fish" idea, and instead go for lots of small-medium sized fish. We'll have to see what they want, but I think she's pretty open to whatever works. Right now they have a few East African cichlids and a gigantic albino common pleco. Oy.

Hey, if I steered away from the big loaches, I could get a bunch of amano shrimp! I like them.

Since I'm going for easy and cheap, how about a school of bright yellow platies instead of gold barbs? Kids would enjoy seeing the babies...and dads would enjoy watching the rainbowfish eat same. :)

Thanks for the suggestions on plants. Frogbit is about as easy as I've found for floaters, and I already have a ton that I know are clean. I like the swords/crypts idea. I've found blyxa really easy, so I'll probably give it a shot. I'm going to do a dirt-under-sand substrate, so crypts and swords should do great. Need to get out and find some good driftwood, too...after the runoff we continue to have this year, there should be plenty to choose from...

(and sorry for rambling--I'm trying to hurry and get off the computer, while cooking/eating lunch, watering the flowers, and having at least two additional conversations with my wife and daughter)

Not if I can talk them into getting rid of it. I already told them that was probably 90% of their water quality problem. The thing's over a foot long.
