And this legit happened today.... :( Opportunistic boogers assassins are... I have no idea how they ended up hanging mid air like that either... The shrimp was just chilling doing shrimp things on the substrate and the assassin dropped out of the moss and grabbed it and I stared hoping I was seeing things for a minute but nope he totally started eating the shrimp. It was a nearly full grown shrimp too. As far as I could tell nothing was wrong with it either I was poking around the tank picking out Riccia from the moss when it happened.

And this is when you begin to contemplate assassinating the assassins...

Well I can't say the thought hadn't crossed my mind... It was epically sneaky the way he did it. But I don't quite believe that assassin can make much of a dent in the shrimp population overall. If I see another of this type of incident though he will most definitely be moving out to different pastures lol there are after all an abundance of bladder and pond snails in this tank.

So you witnessed the assassin incident, from start to finish?

It's rare, but I have read that it does happen...the shrimp was full grown...but healthy?...I know it's hard to judge that

Usually, shrimp are too fast for an assassin, but I've heard of "ambushes" before

I have both in my 40B, and have never seen it happen, but there's lots of places in that tank I can't see, even if I was paying perfect attention

Was this one of those color morphs with purple-ish tints?

Congrats on the berried ladies! ...more culls for me, lol

i was working in the tank, and on that piece of wood. I wasn't looking directly at the participants but saw the snail drop off the wood and realized he had a shrimp.

with all that's been going with my shrimp lately I'm not completely certain but no shrimp had caught my attention as being ill while I was working in there.

    Yes
I kinda stared at it trying to figure out what I was looking at lol the snail was like stuck mid fall on moss or I don't know it was almost spider creepy. I don't know how they got like that I didn't see him land on the shrimp I imagine he could have been been falling out from the bottom lip of the dw because he got the shrimp there. I just saw the motion of the snail falling and looked and that's what I was looking at.

So first small wc down with RODI I left off the DI part for now while I adjust them. I figure better to go as slowly as possible.

I still haven't had any additional deaths but surveying what I lost is damaging. I'd had several PFR remaining but last Monday I went to remove some biofilm and shut off my filter and I guess got distracted as when I returned from work biofilm was still present and I killed 30+ shrimp from the display tank. Rooting around today I've really got not much good left in that tank. Serious bummer.

I do have several berried ladies and I think in a few months when weather is appropriate I'll be ordering some more PFRs. In the meantime I'll start picking through and moving shrimp around to keep the best in that tank and all culls are going to move out. It's going to make for a very very small colony in the meantime but it is what it is. Maybe I'll have enough decent culls to sell off and offset the cost of jump starting my PFRs again. Then again maybe I'll just go with a different color and not worry about culling at all for quality. Just pick off the real poor quality for feeders. We shall see how it goes and how I feel about what direction I want to go when the weather is nice enough to ship again.

Feeling a bit better about my PFRs. I see today that I have a couple quality males ducking about in the display tank. That is great news as when I got going I started with one as the nice males are hard to get.

All the shrimp are really starting to get color back finally too. After whatever was killing them and a major tank remodel they weren't looking to great. I have A LOT of culls to pull after having been about 3 months there's a lot of them. Starting the PFR colony over again isn't such a bad thing as I'd intended to add new blood anyway so now that'll be easy enough to do.

I also finally saw all 7 amanos in the cull tank out today at the same time and my cloudy Amano IS still alive and she's cleared up. I don't know which one it was but all 7 look great today. I don't often see them all at the same time so I've been wondering if she made it or not.

Been a good day for me and my shrimp tanks!

So you think leaving the filter off killed the large group?

What biofilm are you trying to remove?
