I just joined this forum. It looked informative and I need to be informed - don't know much - so this forum will certainly help.
I currently have a 70 gal aquarium with 2 grown Oscars. The tank is just not large enough for these fish. So I bought a 125 gal tank. I'm taking my time to set up the tank. I built a 3D background using Styrofoam and Hydraulic cement. It looks pretty dang good. I filled the tank and it's been sitting for several days. I had to travel out of town and when I returned I found some gritty white stuff inside the tank. There is a significant amount of this stuff. It's floating on top of the water, almost completely covering the surface. A lot has settled to the bottom of the tank and it has most of the tank bottom covered. It doesn't appear to be biological, more mechanical. I don't know where this stuff could have came from. If anyone has experience with this, please let me know what it might be. I plan to drain the tank, rinse out, and refill the tank when I return in a few days. But I don't want to risk putting fish in the tank without knowing what this stuff is.
Anyhow, I plan to visit this forum as time permits. If I can contribute, I will. But I believe I will be soaking in info for some time. Hope everyone has a wonderful day.
    Tks,

    Welcome to the AC!

Do you think that your white stuff is bits of Styrofoam? Can you get a photo and post it here? There are several members here who have experience with successful, homemade backgrounds. Let's get them more information about what you used to build yours, and see what they have to say. Do you have photos of your materials? Can you recall exactly the type that you used?

I'm glad you've joined us and hope to see you around the forum.

    Welcome to AC.

Is the white stuff cement residue? Also with the cement you need to test the pH of the tank as its not inert and will make the tank very alkaline-you have to empty and fill on almost a daily basis until the water stabilizes-which could be a week or two. That is why when I made my background I went with the masonry sealer Drylok instead-less bulk and totally inert.

    A photo would be helpful.
