    Question Prepping Plants

I got some plants for my aquarium today from a neighbor (yay!). She doesn't remember what they are. I'm thinking java ferns?

Just rinsed them off under the tap. Is that enough to prep them for my tank? As in, no unwanted passengers will potentially make my fish sick, right?

Yes, that is java fern...there are many ways to prep plants before adding to a tank, but I usually just rinse well in tap water and pat dry with paper towels

Be sure the rhizome of the java fern does not get buried...you can tie or glue it onto a piece of deco or a rock

The rhizome is the horizontal piece that the roots are growing from

I did not know that about them. Thanks, that's very helpful. :)

    Welcome!

Yes, if the rhizome gets buried, it will rot and the JF will die

Maybe you can tie it to the log deco in your tank?

Yay! New plants! This is your first venture into a planted tank? How exciting! How does your neighbor's tank look? How are the fish? Healthy? That's very kind of your neighbor to help you out. I would just rinse the plants off like Slap suggested. That being said, I've transferred snails from a friend's tank doing that. Take a good look for snails on the leaves and snail eggs if you don't want them in your tank that is.

I'm not seeing any holes or anything. They look healthy
