New 54g aquarium
1
Hi all. I have a 54g aqueon corner aquarium that will be ready for fish in about a week and need advice and/or opinions on stocking it. This is my first tank since I was a teen and got it for my daughter and myself. Really looking to have a community tank with variety in shape, color, size. It has a Aqua Clear Fluval Power Filter 50. Here is what I am looking at getting: Pearl Gourami, Three Line Cory, Angelfish, Serpae Tetra, Zebra Danio, and an algae eater of some sort (twig catfish, Bristlenose Pleco). How many of each do yall think? What would you add or take away? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. I don't have a lot of experience with some of those species. Research the Serpaes before you commit as they can limit your future options. I really like the way they look but they can be serious thugs in a community tank. There are other options with a similar look that are not half as likely to be aggressive. Minimum for a tetra school is about 5-6 fish. More is often much better. Same with cory cats. A single angelfish isn't a bad place to start. A pair of angels can be potential trouble too. Make sure the pleco is a smaller species.

to AC. Are you fishless cycling this tank?

Yes, I am 1 week into a fishless cycle. Already had the nitrite spike over 5ppm and fall to less then .25 ppm. Test yesterday showed less then .25 ppm ammonia, less then .25 ppm nitrite, and 0 ppm nitrate. PH is locked in at 7. And thanks for the welcome.

I like the stocking besides the Serpae for the reasons stated, provided you keep in the proper schools as OnTheFly suggested. An alternative to serpae could be Red phantom tetra, looks a lot like serpae without the aggressive nature, any of the rosy tetra clad, or flame tetras ;-)

I would pick between Gourami or Angelfish. I wouldn't put them together as both can get territoriality aggressive.

Well I got my first group of fishes yesterday. 4 Pearl Gourami and 2 Twig Catfish to start. Will add more in about a month. So far the Gourami are being shy and hiding in the back of the tank behind all the decor. I read that is normal but how long before they get used to the tank and are more out in the open? The Twigs have not been shy at all and have quickly wiped out the little bit of algae that was starting to grow on the decor. They are so fun to look at for me so far. Thanks all for the advice so far.

Every tank is different, could be a few days or a few weeks before the gouramis are comfortable.
How is the tank decorated?...planted?...can you get us a few pics?

Not a planted. All fake plants and tree roots. The are all hiding in the back behind the roots on the left side in this photo.

Any plans for real plants in the future?
Gouramis like alot of cover, at the surface too...I would get some artificial floating plants, and get a good bit of the surface water covered
