    Default Platys: BFF or enemies

I have 2, of 3, males platys are acting a little strange with one another. Initially, I thought they were being playful, but today it doesn't look at playful to me. I have 6 platys, 3 males and 3 females. I was going for 2 sets of 1m/3f. The smaller of the 2 males "frienemies" just dart out no where and nip the other one. The larger male bends his tail and flutters it really fast. Tried posting a video, but no luck.

It is generally a very good idea to get a strong ratio of females to makes. Much easier on the females and the males spend more time making love instead of war.

    Again, welcome to the AC.

Platys are livebearers that breed prolifically, like guppies, mollies, swordtails, endlers

They are in breeding behavior, prepare for many fry

What size tank are they in?

Male platys will chase the females relentlessly. OnTheFly is correct. You should keep two females per male. The females will be much larger than the males.

    Hello Ladycapof3.

I would ask you a couple of questions, in addition to the questions above.

What are your goals, for this tank? Overall, what direction do you want to take it?
Do you wish to have fry? or are you just trying to keep Platys and make them happy?

Also, will the LFS where you bought these fish do an exchange? If you purchased them with the request to try to get 2 males and 4 females, then perhaps you could call the store and let them know that one of the ones actually turned out to be male -- perhaps they would do an exchange for a female.

However, if your goals for this tank are more along the lines of keeping varying colorations of peaceful fish, then there is nothing wrong with an all male Platy group. They get along just fine (until a female livebearer is introduced, that is). Just be mindful of any other livebearing fish.

RiversGirl, yes my plan is to just keep a varition of colorful fish and a peaceful tank. I really didn't put to much thought into having platy fry, honestly.
I believe the LFS will do exchanges. And I have thought exchanging the more fiestier male platy.

*just notice that my female shrimp is pregnant. (My goodness, what is going on when im at work. Lol while mom's away, the fish will play)

It will come in time, lol

No worries, just be prepared to welcome many more into the tank...they will breed and produce fry consistently
