Default Super reds darkening with stress?

    2 Not allowed!
Recently i got a pair of super red cockatoos and hes gotten a bit dark since i got him. When i got him i didn't think he was so dark, but after the transfer he has darkened a bit, the female has stayed relatively the same have any of you guys noticed this? IME when fish get stressed they loose color and lighten up not the other way around. Also he has this white dot near his eye, It's definitely not ich, and it doesn't look like a disease just maybe he got scratched or fought another cockatoo when he was at my lfs.

The white spot looks like a mark possible ran into something at night keep the water clean should be fine. Far as the dark coloration that is normal they darken up alot like you said they will lighten up and lose there dark lateral stripe and face stripe when stressed

The black gravel doesn't help. Not all fish brighten up with black gravel; some end up looking darker.

Congrats on the new fish! They are beauties!

Rocksor, I didn't know that about black substrate, well maybe discus, but had no idea other fish were affected. When I was a kid, I wanted fluorescent gravel, my mother told me fish get stressed with light and bright colours, that dark is best. Does that have any merit today?

Btw, I'm asking about white sand, not fluorescent gravel lol.

Well the fish will reflect it's background also so if it's dark substrate the fish will tend to darken vice versa if it's a lighter substrate like sand.

With darker sub it's also a perspective thing since a colorful fish against a dark background will have more of a contrast

Tan sand is the best all around. Using white sand can cause fish, particularly bottom dwellers to look pale.

Check out how dark these clown loaches are in black gravel.

The same loaches with tan gravel.
