I attended a local event today. Overall a huge success with 45 vendors and easily 500 walk-ins. Most of the vendors acted responsibly with fish in bags, prepped as you would to mail them. There were thousands of fish for sale. But there were 3 or 4 vendors that angered me. This will sound impossible but I saw 100 large fish subjected to unbelievable conditions. 4" angels and discus in bags just a little larger than a ziplock sandwich bag. Maybe 6oz of water. They were laying completely horizontal on tables for hours. Most didn't sell and with travel time these fish were like this for 12 hrs before they could be returned to tanks. No way I would visit those pet stores. I can't believe the fish could endure this shock. Is a larger plastic bag that expensive? I'm thinking not. I purchased cories in twice as much water from other vendors. Just had to share. It was clearly abuse.

I have seen that too when we have auctions and swaps. As a club we make them re bag the fish or they cannot sell them.

It just shocked me. I know angels aren't particularly difficult to breed but very nice angels and discus being treated far worse than LFS feeder fish was hard to fathom. I saw a lot of responsible vendors sell 3/4 of their stock and the abusers didn't so maybe I wasn't the only one to notice it was a very risky purchase.

This would also make me question the conditions they are kept in when back in the tank, too. I agree - risky purchase I would avoid.

when it comes to discus and angels, it is fairly common for them to be shipped flat from what ive seen. I personally am not a fan. But it seems common.

As for lack of water the only way that is ok is if they are using a breather bag.

Just be glad you didn't buy any of those fish
