 Jana's 29G Freshwater Tank

Hi fish peeps :)
I have been setting up a new 29 gallon tank. My hardscaping is complete. And my mega ninja plant order comes tomorrow!
I am at the beginning of cycling. So far .25 ammonia .5 nitrites 0 nitrates.
I have learned that it is best to let the conditions in the aquarium settle after reaching nitrogen cycle targets. So I think maybe I should use this time to set up a quarantine tank, to avoid some heartache down the line.
I am thinking a 20 gallon, no substrate?? Is that the best size? Can I fill it with water from my existing tank since the cycle is getting started?
My fish will be on the nano side: rummynose tetra, green neon tetra, bronze or panda corys and some shrimp. I'm thinking 10 of each.
I will of course look up some detailed instructions before I set up the quarantine.
Any further input appreciated!

Since your tank is just starting out with no fish, there's no point using another tank for quarantine. I would just use the main tank after it cycles. In the meantime you can keep your plant in another tank or container and QT that to make sure no hitchhikers arrive with it. After 4-6 weeks of the fish being in the main tank, I would just put the plant in.

Sounds good. I just got my plant order today (a lot of plants!) I bought some alum to rinse the plants in. I have read this will kill snail eggs and other hitchhikers.

Agree, if its a new setup then essentaily it will be a QT tank, lol.
As for the plants, you can do as Rocksor suggests by QT the plants, or you can dip your plants if you are afraid of any critters hitching a ride. I usually just do a rinse o new plants, going leaf by leaf to see if there are any snails, eggs or anything else (hydra) that has hitched a ride. I have even soaked my plants in tap water for a week-replacing the tap water on a daily basis. The chlorine/chloramine should remove anything overly harmful, plus I go through the plants with a fine tooth comb before I add them to my tank. Whenever I add new plants to the tanks I also trim any damaged leaves and cut a bit off the roots to encourage new growth. I prefer potted plants to stem plants (because I have fish that are brutal to stem plants)-and the stems are a bit more delicate.

i agree, tank looks very good. I also love the plant layout and the rocks in the front. I really love how you have the driftwood set up like shelves, gives great depth to the tank.
(Hey Matt, you are slacking...) Have you started cycling the tank? If not, you may want to top the tank off a little bit, HOB filters work better (quieter) when the water is a bit higher. Some like it to be right up to the trim...
