I prefer the Aqueon Quiet flows to either of the above, plus the chamber is big enough to customize it like an aquaclear with out the pointless "wheel". I had tried AC filters and the two I bought died within a year and year and half of service, plus a replacement I bought worked the wrong way out of the box-the impeller ran the other way and pushed water out instead of sucking it in. Won't go back to AC, the Quiet Flow I have has been working for as long as both the AC's worked and died (which was close to 2 years now), plus the maintenance on it is almost ziltch. It is also pretty inexpensive too, and the Aqueon QF 75 has a flow of 400 gph.

Pointless wheel on the Marineland? Is that what you mean? Any wet/dry filtration like biowheels are superior in biological filtration to any submerged bio-media because it provides more oxygen, hence more growth in the bacteria. However, the problem with the Marineland Penguin/Emperor are due to the noise (after a period of time) and the cartridges that come with it.

I never had luck with the wheels when I had my penguins years and years ago when they were the "new" fad. Every time I did the recommended clean of the pointless cartridge I would have stressed fish and dead fish. No clue it was because I was throwing most of my bacteria away-whatever was supposedly in the wheel wasn't enough. IME, I will go with submerged media over pointless wheels any day.

I also will never use the cartridges in a HOB, I will always customize it to be a mini-canister...like the AC is set up but without the AC motor and style (which for me always had to be primed after a water change since the water level got lower than the intake bar and so the whole motor compartment emptied).

Easily avoided by removing the PU tube before draining the tank, then replacing when full.

I'm with Rocksor the science behind the wheels is superior for the type of bacteria your wanting to colonize :) just the damn cemet mixer is horrible after a while lol

I don't think the wheels are pointless at all. They are doing great as the primary bio-filtration on my 100G tank. Luckily my wheels are attached to a canister filter, so I don't have to deal with the cement mixer noise!

I love how quiet the Aqua Clear is. I have 2 and I always have to check to make sure their running.
Now THAT'S quiet. The Bio Wheel is loud and wheels stop turning after a while. It's a good idea but it doesn't work.
And I hate having to buy specific filter pads for a filter. I'm definitely going with the Aqua Clear 70.
    Thanks for all the help.

Did Fluval buy the Aqua Clear company? I see Fluval HOB filters and they are the same design and construction as the Aqua Clear.
My 2 Aqua Clear 50's have been going strong for 3 years and they were bought used. So I'm thinking they have at least been running for 4-5 years with no problems.
Thanks to everyone for sharing your experienced opinions.
