Yeah-that stuff usually grows if there is excess organics (food, leaves wood) in the tank and will eventually get out competed by other bacteria and disappear. It could have bothered Watson if it lead to an ammonia or nitrite spike. I have had fish eat it and shrimp too. I will even get it to a lesser extent if I put a new piece of driftwood in a tank.

    It's a Start...

This semester is finally coming to a close which means I'll have more time to focus on my hobbies. I plan to reread all the Harry Potter books this summer , in addition to getting my tank all planted (yay!).

It's been a while since I've updated the journal, but as you can see I've done a little work on my tank.

It's not where I want it to be, but it's a start. I also decided to get guppies this time and I'm quite happy with them.
From the top (or I guess left), we have Spot, Sam, and Sunny. They are fun little guys.

    Thank you!

Sorry about the image. I wish I could figure out how to make the orientation better. I guess it might be too big...

If those are cell phone pics, I'll be of no help, but many here have that "sideways" pic problem

The allowable size of the pics was increased here lately by William, so I don't think that is the issue

    Update

I've got quite a few things going on right now with my tank...

First, I decided to upgrade from a 5-gallon to a 10-gallon. It wasn't planned, but I was having trouble keeping my 3 guppies from picking at each other. It was suggested that the group might be too small and that a larger group would help calm things down. So I cleaned out an old 10-gallon (tank only) and moved everything over to it a couple of days ago. As you can see in the photo, one of my guppies now has a torn fin because of the said picking.

While more space hasn't calmed them down any, it does give the target(s) more room to get away.

Second, it was also suggested that I add some more decor to the tank, which I had planned on doing anyway, just not so soon. And I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but I ended up asking for available aquarium plants from a few neighbors in my community's online forum. A few members did reply, so I should be adding live plants to it soon.

And I should probably get some more sand...

Lots of work to do! ;)

Live plants have many benefits for a tank, and you have plenty of room for them.

    Congrats on the upgrade.

Congrats on the upgrade to the larger tank. 10g tanks can be fun to play with.

Once you go live plants, you'll never go back

It becomes somewhat of an obsession for a lot of us haha
