From a wiki link, found in a brief search:

"There are three growth forms. One is epilithic (growing on rocks) and is usually found on the shaded side of the rocks. Another growth form lives as free-floating filaments, as small tufts of unattached filaments that frequently form a carpet on the muddy lake bottom. The third growth form is the lake ball proper, where the algae grow into sizable balls of densely packed algal filaments that radiate from the center."

For the marimo balls you want to rinse them in cool water and gently roll them in the middle of your palms to squeeze the gunk out, do this a couple times-they will be smaller than when you started. Then to give them a pick -me-up put them in a plastic cup or one of those disposable containers and pour some plain seltzer water or mineral water over them-the CO2 in the water will give them a nice boost, you can leave them in it for a couple hours or even overnight in the fridge-just cover it with the lid or plastic wrap. You don't need to rinse the ball out-just put it back in your tank.

    Hi everyone,

It looks like in addition to re-doing my tank, I'll be looking into getting a new fish. I got up this morning and Watson had died overnight. Needless to say, I'm devastated. I'm not sure what caused it yet and he was perfectly fine yetserday.

I don't know, maybe I should pick a hardier fish this time given that I'm new at this?

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about Watson. RIP pretty boy.

Bettas used to be hardy fish, but the over breeding and in breeding has led to them being weaker. It takes a while to find a healthy one, sometimes buying them from a breeder doesn't even guarantee a good betta.

    Thank you, everyone. <3

So I was cleaning out the 2-gallon tank with the hope of maybe putting something in it later and I noticed something that I never had in my 5 gallon...

It's like a clear slime. I can't see it, but when I touched the gravel and decor I could feel it. Any idea what it is? Could it have been the reason Watson died?

Was the 2 gallon cycled? That is a bacterial slime that often occurs with tanks that are or have just cycled, it usually goes away a couple days-weeks after the tanks in cycled and running
