Well...I'm seriously thinking about setting up the 125 as a planted community tank. What substrate works well for you?

Pool filter sand or black diamond blasting sand works quite well for plants. With a tank that size, you could go broke on anything but those two

Black Diamond Blasting Sand is found at Tractor Supply. Pool filter sand can be found at almost anywhere like Lowes, Home Depot, or a pool supply store

Do you recommend dirt under the sand or just sand?

Just sand, keep it simple....and inexpensive

Pool "season" is gearing up, pallets of this stuff will be popping up in Home Depots everywhere...7 or 8 bucks for 50 pounds...I have it in two of my tanks, plants grow just fine in it, and it looks nice, too

Pool sand is great. If you want a dark substrate. Around same cost BDBS 20/40 grit gets my vote. Ive always done a non minerialized soil base except for my current tank. I got on the eco band wagon.....nothing special except cost lol.

You've seen pics of my 40B and 29G, perhaps...I don't even use ferts or CO2, and the plants do just fine with plain old PFS

The 10 gallon is doing well with pool sand also. It just has basic easy plants. Sand has always been my favorite so that's what I'll go with. May try the black diamond this time.

I use Eco-Complete planted aquarium substrate for my tank and all the plants (most medium light level) grow gorgeously.

Milkingmomma, I remember you'd said your life was going to get very busy. When you get a chance to pop in here again, I'd love to know which substrate you went with.
