    Default DIY heater guard?

Hey gang, I'm in need of some advice. I have an Aquatop THC400 heater in my 100gal. I went with this heater because of the reviews of it's longevity as I've had bad luck with other brands and styles. I've burned through 3 heaters in 7yrs, which include a Hydor, Marineland and Eheim. I've had the heater for about 3 months now and just within the past 3 weeks or so my 18 inch Pleco has burned himself on it twice. Once was on the right side of his head in front of the gill and this last time it's the left side of his tail before the rear fin. I'm 100% sure both injuries were from the heater as this last instance I saw him sitting with his tail against it and had to stick my hand in the tank to get him to move. This one is a pretty bad burn also, as a small part of it turned blood red the next day. It's getting better but I don't want this to keep happening. My only other option is to sell him to my LFS and get a smaller, possible BN Pleco (yes I realize an 18" Pleco is too big for my 100gal but the kids refuse to let me get rid of him, lol).

I've let my fingers do some googling for DIY heater guards but figured I'd get some advice here before I decide on what to make. Before any suggests putting it in a filter, I have a canister and an old Cascade 60 HOB, so that's not an option.

Hmmm, I am sure that there would be plenty out there, whom have done it.
I know fluval has a plastic cover for its heater. Check it out and that may give you some ideas

I'm just curious, was the Hydor an inline heater? That would solve the problem rather than having to get rid of the pleco. I can't offer any help as far as a cover goes.

If you will put a heater guard, you should also put a powerhead or water jet to blow water through it so that the heat easily leaves the guard.

I'm seen a couple on Amazon, but I have a feeling that they ship from China directly, hence the 3 week delivery time.

It wasn't an inline, but rather a full submersible. All of them were, including the one I have now.

I may try some gutter guard mesh but I need to figure out what to use to tie or attach the ends together to make a tube. Any ideas that won't be harmful to the inhabitants?

I just had an epiphany! I'm going to try to get the smallest zip ties I can find and see if they'll work. Another dilemma will be how to attach the heater to the tank wall after its encased.....hmm

If you are making a mesh, which I'm assuming which won't touch the heating element, then you should be able to cut out the area where the holder/suction cups are.

Think Sil mentioned that, I agree its a lot more convenient, or go with this one:

He can't burn himself on it. Plus they are on sale now and would qualify for free shipping.
