    Default Fishless Cycle and Ammonia

    1 Not allowed!
So as my apartment is becoming redecorate-able; I'm finally going to set up my bigger tank! (It's been like 2 years)

It's a 22gal and I want to put Harlequins, Neon and Panda tetras in it.

But as trying to cycle with my betta was kind of a nightmare I'm going to do a fishless cycle to spare any fins (and my sanity)

But I've run into a wall - I have never seen ammonia ever in any kind of store; so I don't even know where to look or what to buy. I know it's not supposed to bubble or smell but that's about where my knowledge ends.

And once I've found it - how much do I put into the water? I'm hoping to get 11 of each kind of tetra and 8 harleys once it's ready to go.

    Thanks!

Do you have Ace Hardware up there in Canada?...if so, this is what you want

    http://www.acehardware.com/product/i...ductId=1307957

You will figure the amount to use using the calculator at the bottom of this page, once we know the concentration of ammonia you will be using

You can use the ammonia test from API to verify ammonia is between 2-4ppm (not higher than 4 ppm).

Yeah, I don't think we have Ace Hardware here in Canada. I've never cycled with ammonia so idk where to find it.

When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

Lol Slap! Well, I've never heard of it outside of the AC! OP: Do you have a Canadian Tire nearby? I wonder if home hardware would have something similar. You could ask the staff, I know I ask about everything when I go to those Hardware stores. You want pure ammonia. Check the ingredients and see if there are stabiizers added. If so, look for something else.

I cycle my dirted tanks with well, dirt. My other tanks (non-dirted) I add filter Media from an established tank, but I don't think you have that yet just have gone through a cycle. Plus you'd get a good understanding of the nitrogen cycle going with the ammonia method. When I cycled with media, sometimes I miss the whole nitrite phase.

I do hope you can find it!

This is correct, you want ammonia with no perfumes, dyes, surfactants, detergents...if you shake it and it foams up, it's not good to use
