Agreed Rock. Prefilter sponges will add to biofilteration.

Not if you remove your media from the filter every time you do a WC, like I do...I just pull out the whole basket, media goes into a bowl of water, basket gets scrubbed, floss replaced

I like to catch as much gunk as possible before it reaches my media

It would be easier and quicker using Rock's method Matt. Just grab the dirty poly off the top and replace. Pull the prefilter sponges off the intake with the filter shutdown and clean them with old tank water.

If I have to pull the media anyway since the water level in the filter drops, it's no big deal, takes less than a minute

Either way get rid of the internal AC sponges, add thin layer of polyfil and double up on biomedia. Raise the tank water surface to the bottom of the AC filter spillway.

Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to get the most out of those AC filters.

You have to do that weekly or monthly? I personally like to change polyfill 1-2 times a week, hence the reason for it being on top

Personally I don't like to deal with sponge prefilters but that is a personal preference.

Weekly, at WC time...cleaning of my media involves replacing the poly...removal of dirty poly is actually cleaning the filter a bit.
How do you keep it from floating/flowing out of the filter?...tuck in at the sides?

I use SS mesh prefilters on all of my intakes.

Well yeah but they don't add to the biofiltration capacity if that's really a concern.

Nah, that's what the extra ceramic media is for, since there's more room in the sponge-free filter
