Default Cycling a 20 gallon with Stability and fish

So I'm cycling a 20 gallon using seachem stability and fish. Yesterday I had two deaths (which is the first in this tank). So I'm thinking I may have hit my 1-2 ppm ammonia mark? (I didn't test as I was super busy). I got up and tested this morning and ammonia is around 0.50 ppm. Could this be coming down from a spike that I missed a test for?

I've not done any water changes. Just adding a cap full of stability daily.

    Advice?

There is a thread named Cycling with Fish in the Cycling section

    from the sticky thread:
"If you cycle with fish, it must be with extreme caution, daily testing of the water and doing many water changes to make sure the ammonia never climbs over .25-.50 maximum. (Some fish can not tolerate even this level.)"

I am not familiar with amquel. I use -- and trust -- Prime.

I used amquel years ago. My buddy has used it for years. It's a water conditioner that makes ammonia safe.

Prime renders ammonia, nitrAte, and nitrIte harmless for 24-48 hours.

Get some Prime, follow the cycling with fish sticky linked above.
