    Question Wonder Shell Uses?

    0 Not allowed!
I saw one of these "wonder shells" on on video. Never even heard of them before. Is the something new? Anybody use these and whats the main purpose for them> Also, do they alter the water params much? Im guessing they are to help snails keep their shells in good condition, but maybe there are other uses?

Thats a really in depth article on the shells, thanks Rocksor. I can see alot of advantages for snail and crab tanks.......and fish too. But once started, I wonder if its something you'd have to continue indefinitely.

I'm going to call bs on their claim that "Wonder Shells do NOT generally raise KH or pH" considering the product is calcium carbonate based. Basic chemistry says otherwise.

I found this to be a bit confusing, as well:

"However not essential product with more than 30 years of aquarist use to back it up."

"Two teaspoons (about 4 grams) of calcium carbonate per 189 Litres (50 US G.) of water will increase both General Hardness (GH) and Carbonate Hardness (KH) by approximately 1 degree"

    http://tropica.com/article.asp?type=aquaristic&id=461

So in a 100g tank, you may not even be able to measure a rise in GH, KH or PH, and that is using pure calcium carbonate.

Now let's look at the directions for usage in soft water

"For use with soft water fish or sensitive soft water plants- often a 1/4 dose of AAP Wonder Shells solves this problem along with the more easily measured dosing of SeaChem Replenish at the time of a water change IF RO water is used (for example: a 1/2 medium Wonder Shell for a 60 gallon tank equals 1/4 dose)"

So how much CaCo3 is that? 1 teaspoon? 1/4 teaspoon?
