welcome to the AC. You need not go to any other forum. These peeps know what they are talking about. Not that other forums don't have people just as knowledgeable. Do not take my word for it, when you get some time go read some of their journals they have. heck you started your own journal without even knowing it,lol. good luck. the only advice I can give, since my last tank 20 something years ago was just like your works 50 is keep doing what these peeps say. There is no dumb questions so don't be afraid to ask.

    BB?

I was putting Tetra Safe, but I picked up some Seachem Prime and switched to that.

As for management I am pretty lucky that they have gotten me almost everything I asked for. I did pick up the Master Kit and the Prime myself, but that was my choice. They never said they wouldn't get them for me. Heck, they might be in the way from Amazon and then we will have two. The higher ups have been pretty awesome about redoing this fish tank. They also want the fish to get better and have been super thankful that I took over. My biggest problem work wise is getting my own work done! (But that's okay, I've been bringing work home since I can't bring the tank home!)

BB = beneficial bacteria, that convert the fish and food waste into non-toxic form.

Yes! So Jack is doing great! As is the barb, who now has the name Jaws (I did a contest with my clients and that is the name they voted on.)

We are getting a third fishtank in the building for the goldies. Another nice big 55gal, as I know they grow huge!

The levels in the tank are dropping at an acceptable rate. Ammonia is at .25 but that is also after the weekend so I haven't done a water change for a few days until this morning. Nitrite is 0. Ph is 7.6/7.2. Hardness is around 150. Those are the good ones. XD

Not so good still is Nirtate - 160 (down from 200) and Alkalinity is at 40. So I'm still doing massive water changes ( around 50% of the water ) as often as I can.

The fish are way more active, though still a little stressed (Jack looses his color around once a day but gains it back usually around feeding).

I'm getting there, slowly but surely!

With trAtes that high, you need to do a huge WC as soon as possible, 80% or more

Great news on the fish and the new tank. I hope you do a fishless cycle with the new 55, but I hate to tell you those feeder goldfish are not tank fish and the best option for them is a pond in the future. If you know anyone who has a pond that may be your best bet within the next year or two.

Welcome to AC and congrats on taking the initiative to take care of these fish!! You're already making a HUGE improvement in their well being. If they could thank you they would, and maybe the Jack will stop losing his color in gratitude.

I don't have a lot to add -- I'm new here too -- but I want to echo what Ken said above. This is the best community of fishkeepers I've found online, and like you I was floundering scattershot when I started -- consistent, prudent, and simple advice. Tried and true. There's seriously so much experience on this board it's not funny.

I'm starting a reef tank as well, and even there I've posted to some reef specific forums, and still find better / more actionable advice here, despite the FW focus.

You've found the right place and they'll help you out. I have 2 journals on here from my 2 tanks and you'll see how much the group has helped me... I had them rename my FW tank thread 'our' tank thread, since I can't take credit for the success :)

What I can say is that if you do a real fishless cycle on the new tank with pure ammonia like suggested, you'll be GOLDEN. It couldn't be easier, and after a month or so the water will be so much better for the fish the conditions won't flucuate.

Make sure you have good bio media for your filter to colonize that BB (Beneficial Bacteria) they were talking about.

    Good luck!!!

I wonder what happened with this...
If it's too loud you're too old
If it's too fast then it must be thrash
