Hmmmm I am trying to figure out how to do a diy insert

Best thing is use the pads in the ac20, chucking out the carbon in it. Then try to fit the old filter pad on top.

I personally do not have the ac20 but have the bigger ones which are ac50. And most of the time they are very easy to swap virtually anything into it.

This topfin thing won't fit in at all; it's too wide. I read somewhere else that I could float the topfin one for a little while my new filter picks up the bacteria?

I'm at 0.25 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 20 nitrates if that changes anything? (Did the water change for the ammonia already today)

I'm also still in the process of testing my tank every day - so it's not like I'm going to leave the new filter to run for a week unattended

Those are carbon bags, not actual media, but they will have a bit of BB colonization.

Leave one on the substrate, get the new filter going with it's own media (no carbon, but save it)

Then proceed with the fish-in cycle

Check params, do WC's as necessary

What do you mean on the substrate?

The new filter is on and going, and the ac20 came with a sponge, a carbon bag, and some round things. And I'll keep going with my cycle, and testing as usual. I already tested for today

The substrate is whatever lines the bottom of your tank...sand, gravel, etc...

Just leave one of the carbon bags in the water somewhere, out of the way

Don't use the carbon that came with the AC20, but save it

The "round things" are ceramic media, take good care of those...never allow them to dry out

Okay, we already set up the whole ac20 so the bag of carbon is in there already - boyfriend was being antsy. Should I still add the other carbon bag to the bottom?

Also thank you for all your help!

    No problem.

Leave the AC carbon in the filter for now, but invest in more ceramic media, and switch it out (carbon out, ceramic media in)

Carbon is short-lived, and needs to be changed monthly (which means you will lose beneficial bacteria)

Ceramic media is long lived, and will retain your BB when properly maintained

So I should have the sponge, and biomax and get rid of the carbon in a month for more biomax? Is just one bag good to replace the carbon
