    Default koi angelfish - questions

Hi all - setting up a new tank (see me in the introductions section) & would like angelfish.

110g - live plants - had water for about a week - still setting it up etc. Not planning to add the angels for a month or more while I figure it all out.

While I'm working on getting the tank set up I've started reading about the various types of angelfish on the market & honestly I have more questions than answers.

First & foremost - is it worth it to buy fish online instead of the local store? The extra $40 shipping is a lot on a fish you have never laid eyes on - have any of you had success with this & been happy with the color & quality of the fish you receive? I always have in the back of my mind that they ship out the stock that no one wants.

Second - I've read some on the koi angelfish - they seem to have so much color in the pictures online - is this a true representation of what they look like or are they just showing the super-model's & the country girls are never get their picture taken? (sorry to all you country girls out there - no offense meant).

Lastly - I'm looking for large (will grow to be large) angelfish with lots of color or variation with a good social personality - sounds like a dang dating site, but that's what I want. The koi look good online - but will I get fish with color or what?

Buy fish at the LFS. Make sure that the LFS where you buy them don't have outbreaks of disease or wasting away in other tanks. If the fish just arrived at the LFS, wait at least a couple of weeks before purchasing.

The adult color of the fish depends on its genetics, and you will not know what the fish will look like as an adult when purchased at the size of a quarter or less. Keep nitrates below 20ppm through regular water changes, and then should color up.

So, you're looking for a large colourful angelfish with lots of personality? Well, you are correct to look at the koi strain. Gold (ancestors) angels typically have a larger body compared to other p. angels. But it all depends on what you are considering large....some might aspire for tall fins for example where the body doesn't matter as much. So going with the koi strain.....

When most people describe a colourful koi angel, they are usually referring to the amount of orange the fish displays so I'm going to assume this is what you have your eye on.

The orange in koi angels vary depending on their genetics as mentioned. Breeders colour breed their fish to acheive the most orange in offspring. That's why the price is what it is, it takes generations to acheive certain traits. But I've never ordered angelfish, so I have no advice to give you there :(

But to help you recognize a koi angel at the LFS, young koi angels will have clear fins (no horizontal striations), have varying degrees of black marbling, and blushing gills. As the fish matures, the tissue around the gills toughen (blushing fades away) and reflective deposits appear on the flanks. The amount of orange will further develop as the fish matures, if it's part of their generic makeup, so it would be difficult to pick out for certainty a high coverage koi, but at least you can make an educated guess. I've seen many times gold marble angelfish being sold as more pricey koi angelfish, so have a good look at your angels before purchasing.

They all have lots of personality, so don't worry about that! And their personalities are all different!

Really, you have to look carefully, know what you're looking for and have patience. Haha, I guess it's much easier to let a breeder to the hard work, it's trusting them that would be an issue. Without ever having experience ordering fish, I've seen ads and wish I could get some of them shipped to me. I would hope they'd take pics of the actual fish, at least with the angelfish I've looked at. That being said, I've also seen orange BN being sold as "super reds" with a pic taken in a very warm spectrum. Most of the times, you can tell when a photo had been modified. Reviews are helpful as well.
