Question Tap Water Results are in... advice on types of fish

    0 Not allowed!
Okay the results are in. I'm hoping these are good numbers, who knows. Well... you all probably do lol.

I just want to know what this limits me to ... some day when my kids are all in school and ignoring me I would like discus, but right now I'm happy with community fish and my goldfish.

so here's the results after the tap water sat for a day.

    pH - 8
    NH3 - .25 (why does it have ammonia!!!??? )
    N02 - 0
    N03 - less than 5 but not 0
    GH - 3
    KH - 4

Any help translating these numbers please and thank you <3

Very nice its very soft water so with addition of leaves or peat filtered water you could lower that pH for discus in the future.

You could keep all kinds of fish with those levels skys the limit.

My tap tests at 1.0 for ammonia, and I drink it, and cook with it

    What's up with that

Some tap water contains ammonia, there's nothing severely atypical with that. I have heard that some tests actually pick up on the chloramine (and/or its breakdown products) used to disinfect the water, though I'm not sure whether that's true or not.

A good water conditioner should deal with that level of ammonia in the water.

With your water parameters the vast majority of tropical fish should be perfectly fine.

thanks so much everyone. Honestly, when i saw my pH was an 8, i was a little concerned. so I am glad I found a thread somewhere on here talking about how its the GH KH that really makes or breaks you. Should be a fun year of tank building for me :)

The waiting isn't half so bad. It gives you ample time to plan your stock and change your mind a few times before committing.

I'm looking forward to watching your build/s.
