He's a beauty! I have never had angels-but maybe he is the lowest on the totem pole and is on the mend from them establishing their pecking order?

Ahhh yes, the wonderful pecking order! How long does it take exactly to establish this? They have all grown up and been living together for almost a year. I did sit and watch them after their night time feeding tonight and I've noticed a few things but before I go any further, let me refresh.....

I have 2 Angel pairs and 2 other males (6 total) - one pair occupies the right side of the tank, the other pair the left side.

Then I have 2 remaining males (pretty sure they're males).

The Angel pair that occupied the right side, haven't laid eggs for quite a long time now. And the male from that pair is the one currently in question.

The pair that occupies the left, lays eggs all the freaking time. This was my 2nd pair that formed.

I'm noticing that one of the males (bent fin) that was once on his own, by himself, "may have" stolen the other ones girlfriend and has since taken over the right side of the tank with his cuddly new partner because those two and the other two that occupy the left side are all chasing the lonely 2 males out into the middle of the tank. This is such crazy behavior. If it's normal, I understand. I just hate to think about any of these fish being sick because that would break my heart.

Hope I didn't lose you guys with this explanation.

The cichlid pecking order is always fluid. It can change even as adults, and years from now. If an aggressive fish spends to much energy and shows signs of weakness, the next one in line or even the bottom one will fight it's way to the top. That's just how cichlids are.

In the wild things are a bit different because they have to worry about predators (never mind that the predator can force the change in the pecking order), and the bullied could get far enough away or hide in the crowd to longer be bullied.

Thanks Rocksor. So, unless there are true signs of illness or serious aggression, I should just keep an eye out and let things be? This is my first time having cichlids and I did read about them before I got them but actually experiencing it in my own tank is another story.

I guess they don't waste any time either. They have just laid about 50 eggs on my intake tube on the right side of the tank. What a little "two-timer". lol

Omg sorry I missed this completely! Lol, I used to write tank soap operas in my journal, those angels are notorious for changing partners when there's a group. Like Rocksor said, for some reason, your alfa male fell down the pecking order. I myself can't see anything wrong in the pic, although it's obvious he's been picked on since his dorsal fin is a bit chewed up. He's still a beauty! Love his gold lips! But if he continues to hide all the time, he may become stressed and ill. How long has the hiding been going on for? Is the area under the DW large enough for him to hide? His fin might heal in crooked if he doesn't have enough vertical room. If the aggression has just started, (I'm guessing) the alfa had to know he's been kicked out of first place and the new male has to court the gravid female. I imagine that wouldn't make the original male feel very good.....

I haven't had much experience keeping more than 2 male angelfish in one tank. When I had 3 males, I had to separate them. Angelfish personalities are all so different, it's very difficult to give advice on this one way or another. The usual advice would be to change the territory (decor) around. But this would possibly mess with your other pair and you have a new pair on the left side too.

Is this your 60g tank or 125g?
