I have two behind the driftwood that are popping out of the substrate. The closest plant to them is at least 4" away. I have the co2 but i haven't done any ferts, hadn't really decided if i was even going to mess with them. I haven't used them on my little 5.5 gallon either.

Question for people with neon experience. My school of neon's stay at the bottom of the tank pretty much all the time, in the patch of micro swords. I don't think they ever get out and swim around. I worry sometimes they aren't getting enough food. Is it possible that the current is still too much, even after i moved back to the back of the aquarium? Or is this normal for them? If a flow problem, any thing i can do with the spray bar to help it out?

My neons picked out their favorite plant and hang fairly close to it. It is up higher in the tank -- probably high mid-tank, roughly. Mine eat well, come to wherever the food is, swim around a bit too, but aren't super active fish.

Getting enough for them to feel comfortable is important, good question above.

neons do like a low flow. I've always kept them in a smaller tank with less powerful filters and they've been pretty active around the tank. Not sure how long you've had them but they may develop a greater comfort level and start to appear more. Larger numbers of neons can also increase their confidence. nice tank

I bought a group of 20 and later added 10, i have lost 5 which is where some of my concern about eating come from. Every time i loose one i check my water again (in addition to my normal checks) and the parameters are great, and i keep it at 76 degrees. I have had the first group of neons about 3 weeks and the second about 1 week. The Colombians and my 6 Cory cats are very active and are doing amazing, just not sure where i am going wrong with the neons.

Could very well be weak stock with the neons, they many times are overbred to the point where it affects their health.

Maybe so, i got them from two different sources and not a 100% which ones I have lost. Maybe I'll quit loosing them if that's all it is. They may be small but i don't like loosing any fish.

It's always hit or miss when buying these small tetra from LFS.

Few things you can do to help with losses are.

    1. Ask the LFS how long they've had the fish If its less then a week then there's a high chance for some losses.

    2. Ask about the LFS waters parameters pH and TDS if its significantly different then your own then this lets you know what type of acclimation is best, Drip method etc
