Default Looking for cichlid species suggestions.

I have a 75 gallon aquarium that has nothing it at the moment. I would like suggestions on what cichlid I should get. I prefer bigger species that I can keep in a pair or alone. I'd like to avoid the more common species (Jack Dempseys, oscars, etc.) because I work at a pet store where I see and work with them almost daily.

Do you have hard or soft water? Any cichlid that stays 10" or less will be fine as a pair or alone. I would try any of the Crenicichla saxatilis pikes. You could also try polleni cichlid.

I can readily change my water to what I want without too much difficulty due to where I work. The tank hasn't really been set up too much yet. I'm waiting to find out what I want to make an ideal set up for it. It's funny that you say polleni because that and a bleekeri is what I've been looking at. That saxatilis is really cool too! I guess I should mention that I'm open to african cichlids too.

bleekeri no longer exists as a classification. They are both polleni now.

Once I had many Cichlid tanks, most of them depend on displaying the beauty only with the colorful fish. You may keep African Cichlid, they live a long life. All African Cichlids should be kept in water with a pH of 7.5-9.0 and a temperature between 25-28C.

Biotodoma cupido. Peaceful, interesting and pretty cichlid that grows to about five inches. Soft water, warm temperatures. You could add tetras and corydoras.

Here's one I've always liked that does not get real big and is peaceful for a Cichlid, the Rainbow Cichlid (Herotilapia multispinosa)
