Another option to the krib or ram might be an apistogramma, like Apistogramma cacatuoides

The only other cichlid i'm possibly considering for this tank is a pair of buffalohead cichlids. I now have thought about getting a strictly top dwelling fish so that I can get a pair of Kribensis and hope to breed them maybe a African butterfly fish wouldn't be a bad idea after all. Would a small shoal guppies or zebra danio be okay as dither fish?

With a PAIR of kribs in a 20g, that changes everything again! I think that guppies would really get beat on :( They aren't the smartest fish....and kribs get really aggressive with other fish when they're breeding. It really depends on how aggressive your kribs get and how much territory they claim. It's a gamble with cichlids especially in smaller tanks. Maybe they'd be fine on their own? Especially if you'd like to breed them.

I can't comment on danios, I'm not familiar. I've never kept the african butterfly fish either, but plan to one day. They look really awesome, and can be kept with kribs, but I really think it would outgrow your tank :( They need a longer surface area in the tank, and wouldn't be compatible with smaller top strata fish like guppies either in that size of tank.

In that case I guess i'll just stick to one kribensis with a shoal of Black Neons or Silver(or Marble) hatchet fish with Habrosus cory.

I like that plan. A female krib and a school of black neons, a school of little cories.
