well I don't think the fish was wearing any lipstick... the area's about 1/4" wide, so I can promise you whoever did it had mighty small lips.

Ouch, that little stinker! How do you stop that from happening in the future-I am sure he will grow to leave more than lipstick behind one day.

Haven't posted pictures in a while, so I'm going to do that! And then we're going to talk about plants!

group shot of some of the gang. Everybody's been getting along reasonably well, no troubles once I finally got my water quality squared away in January.

This is an "Eastern Happy", one of the newer fish. Caught him mid-yawn here.

    Tomato Red.

Yellow Lab, looking a bit chubby. I have to put in a fair bit of food to make sure some make it down to the catfish. Some of the cichlids get more than their share, and he's one of them.

Red Cap Lethrinops. When I added the Eastern Happy these two fought a bit, because they're both similar sized green fish. They got things sorted out though and leave each other alone now.

Blue Dolphin cichlid. Will eventually be one of the biggest fish in the tank, I think.

    Blood dragon.

    Zebra Obliquidens.

The albino socolofi is one of the smallest fish in the tank. It hangs out under this overhang almost all the time. For a while after I got it I was afraid that it was going to starve. However it has gradually improved. Lately, when the food hits the water it comes out and mixes it up with all the other fish. It just tends to return to its spot when the food is gone.

Eureka Red, the biter. He got me again during today's water change, but it was a more tentative bite. Didn't leave a mark this time.

I still have a few nearly colorless fish, including some who actually lost color once in the tank when compared to how they were in the store and in QT. This is a Taiwan Reef, and it should be as brilliantly colored as the Eureka Red, only with a yellow body instead of a red one. At this point my only guess is that it's a dominance thing. The ones without colors just don't feel like they measure up compared to the brighter ones. Don't think there's much I can do about it.

I have six synodontis catfish. Two of them are new and small, like this one. Still not sure if the color variations I see mean they're not all actually Multipunctatus, or what.

And here's one of the older, larger ones.

Electric blue maingano. He's the other small one in the group but unlike the albino he's never been shy in coloration or prone to hiding.

So... plants. The plants are not doing well, at all. It's been seven months since I added them, and two and a half months since I upgraded the lighting. They're not growing, at all. They're not even attaching themselves to the rocks... they're coming dislodged when I bump them or from the water flow. I'm not sure what the problem is. Since these are hardy low light plants I don't blame the lights - they grew better when I put them in the frog tank I used to have, and that didn't have any lights at all. I have to assume they don't like the hard, basic water I've created for the fish. I'll talk to my boss, but I think it might be time to toss them and pick up some fake plants.

So... anyone have a line of high quality artificial plants that they'd recommend?

Great shots of the fish...as far as plants go, I thought they and cichlids mixed like oil and water in the first place, lol

I agree, fish look awesome. Glad to hear they are doing well. Can't help you with plants, haven gone silk for almost 20 years. Maybe Lee can help? I know Laura Grond uses silk plants from craft stores.

Yeah, it was a long shot to begin with. Didn't cost me anything, since the plants came from my community at home.

Blue dolphin cichlids don't have yellow spots on the unpaired bottom fin. Blue zebra cichlids do.

Interesting! Guess my lfs needs to work on their labeling. Or maybe their supplier is to blame. Well, in any case... should be a compatible fish. Just won't get as big as I thought.
