You could add more plants to out compete the algae.

    Why the RO water?

Java is a slow growing plant and you have high light-unfortunately that will lead to algae. Cut they cycle down to 6-8 hours or break it up into two 4 hour periods and see if that helps.

I also have CO2, dose with EI and have medium lighting and my java and anubias is speckled with algae. Nerite snails help.

I used RO because the water here is just horrible. I'll try a little lower light and maybe replace the java. The swords are growing at a crazy rate. I also supplement with Flourish Excel. I'll knock it down to 8.5hrs and see if it helps at all. I'd really like 10hrs of light but I don't want to have the whole tank be plants. This isn't easy :(

    Thanks for the replies guys

Do you add anything like Equilibrium by Seachem for the plants with the RO water?

I know I read you added Excel. Excel is the liquid carbon / algaecide. However equilibrium replaces the minerals and metals that are taken out by deionizing the water. A lack of these might be detrimental to your plant growth allowing your LG to take a hold.

I mix in 1 gallon of plain filtered water for every 3 gallons of RO. The expert guy down the road tested my water all which way wand said it was perfect. I only test for ammonia, ph and nitrates so I have to take his word.

From your comment is there something I should be testing for?

Did you add any minerals to the RO water?

First thing I thought looking at your pics is "what algae?"

Which type of algae you seeing? When leaves on my java fern start to grow black spots, I prune it off. But if I miss one leaf or two, new java plantlets start to sprout. Or, am I not seeing the color well enough? Is it green spot algae and not leaf deterioration?

Btw, those nerite snails like Boundava mentioned are the only critter that I know of that will take care of green spot algae.

I agree with Joe, can you add more plants? Floating ones would be best to cut down on lighting at the same time. But as Boundava helped me with my algae problems already, cutting the photoperiod down and adding a siesta has really helped for my trouble tank. I really only keep my stronger lights on for 6-7 hours tops in any of my tanks!

Love your rams! What is the M/F ratio? I see one EB ram and 3 GBRs?
