Lovely pictures. I think I'm going to go with the Bolivian Ram, then. He sounds like he would go well with the other fish. I did a water change today so I'll probably pick him up some time tomorrow. I saw one with extended fins the other day, I hope he's still there. I'll post pictures once I get him and try to post more if he colors up. I'm really excited now.

On another note, I'm wondering if I should get some sinking Cichlid-specific food for him. I already have the following sinking foods scheduled on a rotation: Omega One Shrimp Pellets, Hikari Sinking Wafers, Omega One Veggie Rounds, Fluval Multiveggie Formula. The first two are meant for omnivores, and the other two are geared more toward herbivores. I feed the omnivore types more times a week in the rotation. Would those give him enough of a balance, or should I add some food specifically for Cichlids into the mix? Any suggestions on what a good type would be?

I'll be picking up some frozen food high in carotenoids, like daphnia or brine shrimp, too. But I want to make sure he has appropriate dry foods as well, as that will be the bulk of his diet.

I think I have most everything else already the way he'll like it. The substrate is sand, there are caves and stone and wood in the tank, lots of plants but some open swimming space. He'll have dither fish. There's some floating plants to diffuse the light, and the current should be calm enough for him. I think the water quality should be up to his standards, and I just did the weekly water change today, just under 50%, to make sure that the Nitrates are low and it be a few days before he has to deal with a water change, so he should have time to settle in. Would you recommend standard or drip acclimation for Bolivians?

Also, I usually rearrange the decor during the weekly water change with this aquarium. It keeps the tank looking fresh, and I really enjoy coming up with different ones with the same building blocks. I can do this because all the plants are fake. Previously this hasn't been a problem because no one's been territorial, and so they don't have territory markers that are suddenly reset. Would this be alright with the 1 Bolivian Ram in there, or would it drive him crazy or cause him to feel that he constantly needed to reclaim to the other fish what part is "his?" Or would he be less territorial without breeding involved to the point he didn't mind having a weekly change of scenery and territory markers?

Anything about his care that I should keep in mind?

The food that you have are fine for the ram.

Don't change the décor until after its settled in for a few weeks.

Here's my new Bolivian. I think he's a boy, because he had the longest caudal fin extensions of all the ones that they had. Of the fish there, he had the most yellow, such as it was. He also has a pretty impressive dorsal fin. His name is Ramza Beoulve, after the main character in the video game Final Fantasy Tactics. Puns make me happy.

Here he is in the bag right before he got acclimated:

Once he was acclimated and placed in the new tank, he got even more washed out.

But you can see in this one he still has a lovely large dorsal fin.

I’ve never had a fish behave like this one did when I let him into the main tank. Instead of hiding or going to explore, he sat and stared at me and my husband. You could actually see his eye following us, and he turned his body so he could look first at me, then at my husband, then at a cat that came by. He was much more interested in us than the other fish or the aquarium surroundings. My husband pointed at him, and you could even see him follow my husband’s hand movements with his eye. It was such a weird experience, I’ve never had a fish like that before. He looked like he was really observing and considering.

Eventually we left the room to give him time to explore without worrying about us, as he seemed determined to sit and watch us as long as we sat and watched him.

A few hours later, I spotted him foraging among the Corycats.

I suspect he still has some growing to do.

I think his colors will improve as he continues to settle in.

Welcome to the world of cichlids! Yes, you are right, they behave nothing like tetras or other fish. Cichlids have so much personality, and when I have only one in the tank, they seem to really bond with the owner, pretty soon he'll be eating from your fingers. Congrats on your new addition. He's a real beauty and will colour up even more as he feels more comfortable and matures.
