Can it actually get this big? I'm thinking it's either a bigger variety, or from someone's huge pond lol!

I took pics of it in the bag still, I'm not sure I want regular duckweed. Although, I did read about how it absorbs so many nutrients, and thought it would not be a bad idea to battle BBA.

But anyway, the roots are REALLY long. Does regular duckweed get that big in optimal conditions?

(There IS some regular duckweed caught in it, OR
are these the same duckweed type, just grown or propagated in an aquarium setting? )

you my friend have water lettuce. its as invasive as duckweed and the roots will overcrowd a 75 gallon tank. However you can take them out and cut them short and let it regrow.

It actually looks like my frogbit-so much easier to remove than the teeny-tiny PITA duckweed that if you miss one bity leaf you are infested by hundred within a week.

I would say it's Frog Bit...

Be prepared to remove some from your tank at every water change once you get the coverage you want. Super easy plant to keep and it grows and multiplies like crazy. Not quite as fast as duckweed, and much easier to remove, as it does grow in a bunches, not individual "leaf plants" like duck weed.

I keep it in my Betta tank, and my Betta loves it for its long root system. He swims among the roots a lot. Sometimes though, I feel as if I really grow it as a snack for my Goldfish, who love the stuff. That's what I do when the Betta tank gets too much growth. I pull it out of that tank and toss it in with my Goldfish who devour it.
It's my kids fault I am hooked on this hobby... It all started with a Desktop 5 Gallon Father's Day Gift!

I've seen dwarfed water lettuce in tank environments, and they can get pretty small. The photos aren't clear, but there's an easy way to tell the two apart: Frogbit has nearly round, thick, spongy leaves that are smooth and shiny. Water lettuce has thinner, more elongated leaves that tend to be fuzzy and somewhat ribbed.
