Default 76 Gallon Tank stocking ideas?

    1 Not allowed!
Hello! I'm new to fish keeping and would like some advice on what to stock my tank with. We got a pleco from PetCo for a 6.5 gallon tank but know he's far to large for it, so we got him a 76 G tank. We were told to get rid of him but the entire house fell for the Fat Boy. Any thoughts on what to put with him would be wonderful!

In a 75g tank you have lots of options. You can have different groups of tetras and Corys, etc. I don't have a pleco but many people here have them in their tanks. Check out some of the Journals on AC to see what they have. Especially check out Nat's Evolving 75G.

    Welcome to the AC.

A 75G offers a myriad of options for stocking, just depends on what fish you like.

I would advise you to read as many of the stickys in the beginner section that you can, particularly the ones on cycling a tank.

    Hey there,

So nice to hear that another pleco gets a chance for nice happy like in a much larger tank.

As for stocking ideas, like all the others there is so many options out there.
Firstly though what are your plans? Planted tank logs ect?
Some stocking options can be hindered by options chosen by how the tank is set up ect.

Nice upgrade to a bigger tank! Welcome to the AC.

For stocking plans, it is very useful to know what your pH is. This way, you can stock according to your water, instead of struggling later.

I hope to be able to have a planted tank with a log, I read that Plecos like having them in their tanks. We don't really know what the PH is because we haven't gotten it set up yet.

    Hey there,

Yes they do like/need logs. I dot as such keep places [or spent much time with them] But I do keep/ use to bread huge amounts of Bristle Nose. And timber is a small part of their diet.
So my tank has plenty in it for them to munch on.

Now that your going planted, thats helped rule out some species. And also narrowed things down a bit.
For me i am a sucker to sticking to limited stock and more so to regional or at least from the same rough location.
So since your already there with a pleco, my idea would be like this.

    15 bleeding heart tetras
    10 neon tetras
7 bronze cory [or cory of you liking]
7 or so hatchet fish [provided there is enough long term planting theme.]

If it is a common pleco, you will be at 57% stocked for an adult.
