I wish I had had my camera with me today. There was a huge school of bluegill fry wandering around the edge of the drop off, with a bass casually cruising under them, picking off strays.

Now, for those of you just tuning in, I know it is unusual for any of us to eat our fish. You should understand that this pond is more than just ornamental. It is sort of a combined irrigation, aquaculture, landscaping, and wildlife habitat project. One of our stated goals was originally to have a self-sustaining, harvestable population of game fish. After many years, I think we're finally there. I talked to the local fisheries biologist yesterday, and he said we probably need to start removing most or all of the adults, so that the babies which survive the bass gauntlet have room to grow up.

All that just to say this: We had bluegill parmesan last night. Badgerling caught them; I filleted and baked them. Also, fried tomato polenta and a big pile of butterhead lettuce from the garden. There isn't much meat on these guys yet, but they're delicious!

I have GOT to get some pics of this pond on here before the winter freeze hits. Sorry, I have elk on the brain this time of year. Anyway, I finished covering the lining with rocks and it's looking great. And surprise surprise, I'm seeing quite a lot of baby bass in the shallows! Largemouths aren't supposed to be able to spawn in a pond this small. The fish biologist who supervised our stocking a last year was quite surprised when I told him.

Congrats on your successful breeding stock setup. That's awesome you proved smaller ponds could work, given the right attention to detail that you obviously provided. Relish the sweetness in your success - and the fresh, healthy dinner for your family's future meals.

Please don't sell yourself short though. You thought though the setup - to mimic nature - and hauled in a whole lot of rock. You made sure the liner would retain water so they would not run dry, you thought over what to stock. You set up this pond in an area that was conducive to success.

Having a pretty bad algae bloom--gross, gloppy stuff. I sure hope it clears before the winter freeze, or I'm going to have a bad winter kill when it all rots under the ice. But for all that, Wow, we are very blessed to live here. :)
