Although it seems what happened to your tanks was a complete accident, I couldn't help but be reminded of this:

A tragic and senseless event that could have been avoided.

I'm sure your friend meant to cause no harm, but if I may, this thread would be IMO an event that should be documented here, perhaps even in a sticky, about the real, devastating harm overfeeding can cause in any given freshwater tank.

With the OP's permission, I may re-title this thread with something like "The Dangers of Overfeeding" or something similar, create a sticky in the beginner section, and hopefully avoid situations like this in the future, while at the same time educating anyone who may need a "fish sitter" to gain some knowledge from the OP's first hand experience, .

    Thoughts and comments, please

I would be honored to have this thread renamed and made into a sticky. I really meant this thread as a warning and can't belive myself how fast a tank can crash with overfeeding. It really blew my mind.

If I wasn't so traumatized, and I get the guts to ask someone to feed my fish, they must be educated better, I can't stress that enough, but also separating daily food amounts into those little mon, tues, wed pill containers would have been a good idea. I didn't think it was necessary, but never assume anything!

For an update, I'm still doing major cleans and water changes, but everything is now under control. Any cloudy tanks are now clear, except that 5g fry tank, which is looking 75% better. No more deaths and fish are acting normal and abdominal swelling is now back to normal. I haven't fed them yet, but they will get a little bit of something special and nutritious today. I have done small water changes in every tank, removed any protein film and any visible uneaten food. Like I said, this is going to take weeks for me to get back the way I like it, but at least my fish are all doing well to report.

For anyone ever dealing with something like this, I added Seachem Prime (dosed the tank volume) did my cleaning/removal of rotten food and protein film etc...and raised my spraybars or lowered the water level in the tank to create water surface agitation, and therefore oxygenate the tank. I also lowered my temperatures to 78°f or lower. In a situation like mine, the oxygen would be very depleated, and it was obvious the way my angels were breathing and their stance/presentation was brutal. It's a scary thing!

I'm doing each tank one by one now, a big wipe down, syphoning and water change, then in a day or two after the water change, I'm cleaning the canisters well. I have to remember there's no hurry now. As long as the fish are ok. If I do too much too fast, I could further compromise the cycle. Nothing good happens quickly!
