I'm due for A change this weekend so I'll take your advice and service my filter. When I do clean my cannister clean everything in tank water correct!Maybe once I open up my canister being its going to be open up already should I add some Sea-chem matrix to help with the nitrates.I have the room to add it if I need to as I took my carbon bags out awhile ago and never put them back in!

The Sea-Chem matrix will not help with nitrates but I wouldn't say not to add it if theres room for it in the filter!

And yes make sure to clean the biomedia in old tank water or treated water during the water change don't want to kill any bacteria by potentially exposing it to water containing chlorine :)

My bad I saw some key points to touch on...

You can clean the filter housing in tap, but clean the media in old tank water...when I start to empty my tanks I fill a bucket with tank water, throw the media in it while I clean the filter...swish around in the bucket, then replace...just don't let it dry out

I just figured Matrix was worth A shot I plan on adding more plants soon but aside from using r/o water is there anything else I can do to reduce nitrates in my water thats why I thought adding de-nitrate or matrix may help a little. As mentioned I have nitrates coming from my tap and I've been down this road with my water company I am within the legal limit as they test water differently for humans as I believe its tested as A gas as the high nitrate reading I am getting is as A whole.

I use prime with Each water change I was looking for some kind of de-nitrater to put into my cannister if possible, and thanks Slappy that was what my game plan was just wanted to double check on things as I hve not had A tank set up in awhile my africans were such hardy fish delicate was not part of their nature so I kind of did things the wrong way with them. They got along just fine but it could have been done alot betterand smarter when I was keeping them so I'm trying to learn and do things the right way this go around!!
