I have the brine shrimp cubes - but only have offered them when the fish appeared to be aggressively eating as to not have a bunch of dead sea monkeys floating about..
    I'll try a small bit..

Ok. I have confirmed place is eating and pooping.
The cichlids - still no visual proof.
I offered some brine shrimp and dropped temps to 77.
It's bugging me enough that I'm considering full gamut testing.
    Water hardness etc.?
Would this be worth the expense?

First you said that nothing was added to the tank in 2016 but then you said the pleco is a few months old. Could he have brought "something" into the tank with him?

I have had fish that get "spoiled" when it comes to feeding. If well fed and a pattern such as flake food one day and bloodworms the next, I've seen them hold off to wait for the more desired food. Have you tried simply not feeding them for a couple days?

    *PROBLEM RESOLVED*

So - I lost my black cichlid and the firemouth. I'm pretty certain they simply starved to death.
I was checking levels and doing water changes by the book.
Pleco was cleaning up uneaten food.
I added a pair of smallish oscars as I've always known them to be fantastic eaters pretty much in any situation. So what happens? They both disappear behind the HoT prefilter, unseen for three days.
    What the???

So after the firemouth died I want out and got kH and gH testing kits. Last resort - and guess what? Even though all my other levels were stone perfect, both kH and gH were totally flat-line.
Added bicarb, then epsom salt, then a bit of calcium chlor that I had on hand and bang - within hours everyone was out and eating and acting like normal fish.
Added these same items again for a couple days and now I've had a solid week of thriving fish...
    Who would have guessed?
So now I'm on to my newest problem (new forum question coming up)

What is the KH and GH of your tap water that you use for water changes?

Which is weird because middle TN is limestone central and in years past my gH and kH roared - in this very tank.

Do you have a water softener?

Ideally, you want the KH to be at least 4 degrees. With the Oscars, you want soft water
