Question Water Quality Numbers with API Quick Start

    0 Not allowed!
We are cycling our new tank using API Quick Start. The quick start has been in there for 14 days. We added more quick start 11 days ago when we added fish. We have 7 almost 2 inch fish in an 110 gallon freshwater aquarium. From reading a lot on cycling, our water parameter levels are no where close to the spikes that are supposed to signify certain stages of the cycle. So basically, we have no idea where in the cycle we are and also if the API quick start diminishes the spikes. This weekend, the nitrites were finally not 0. We have nitrites at 0.50, ammonia at 0.25, and nitrate at 10. I plan on testing our tap water for these water quality measurements as well tonight. However, previously, we always had readings of ammonia between 0 to 0.25 because we can never determine the color on the card, nitrite at 0 and nitrate at 5-10 (again, the card). If anyone has experience cycling with API quick start, please let us know what we should be expecting.

For a fish in cycle, you need to do enough water changes to keep both ammonia and nitrites below 0.5ppm, regardless if you are using bacteria in a bottle. So you are due for a 50% water change.

Good question from Boundava and Rocksor is correct on assuring that your ammonia and nitrite levels remain under .5ppm these will kill fish very quickly.

Also its a good idea to check the source water parameters.

Other important factors to check/control are temp,ph and oxygen to ensure the optimal environment for bacteria growth

I have not used Quick Start exactly, but I have used a similar product on a tank a few years ago. IME, I wound up doing a fish-in cycle. The product didn't really do anything for my cycle. I would go through and read the stickies on fish-in cycling. As others have stated, you are going to need to start water changes to keep those ammonia and nitrite levels down and protect your fish.

+1 to the above, see the link here, and follow it to cycle your tank.

A cycled tank does not come in a bottle, it is a ploy to have you spend $ you don't need to waste.

    You'll need this: https://www.amazon.com/Seachem-11604.../dp/B00025694O

    And this: https://www.amazon.com/API-Freshwate.../dp/B000255NCI

Good luck with your cycle, I hope it works out well for you.

100% there isn't really an "easy way" IME anything worth having involves patience and a bit of work.

We used the API testing kits. Tap water is 0 nitrite, 0 ammonia, and 5 nitrate. Our pH has consistently been 7.8 with a temp of 78.6. As of this morning, we were still reading the exact same for the tank.
