What on earth is the topic of converse? There are too many posts for me to keep up with? I have experience with Black Kuhli loaches, but never really heard of any others. Would you like to keep going with the topic of Zebra Loaches? Hold on. How big is your tank and what's in there at the moment?

Hi. I'm not sure when you arrived here at the AC, but this thread is almost 4 years old now from whenever I first started up my very first and only aquarium. There are many different topics of conversation within this thread. Right now I'm just asking about zebra loaches and if anyone here has any experience with them.

My tank is a 40B with the following inhabitants:

    3 Colombian tetra
    14 rummynose tetra
    18 green neon tetra
    7 sterbai cory
    6 dwarf chain loaches
    2 SAE
    5 bamboo/Singapore shrimp
    1 kuhli loach
    Assassin snails
    RCS
    Blue velvet shrimp

The last 3 are an undetermined amount as I can't really count all of them.

Most of those numbers are not what I started with when I first purchased each, as I've had a few different species die unfortunately. But that's to be expected. Everyone in there currently is in healthy shape.

    Thanks!!

It says November 2019 when I joined (top right of this post). I like the content of that tank and I figured out 40B means 40 Bowfront. It's an active thread. If it wasn't active within the past 3-4 months, I wouldn't be asking questions about the tank. It appears you can add in a lot in a large community tank. I like the choice of Rummynose tetra.

It's not a bow front tank. 40B means 40 gallon breeder tank specially designed if you're wanting to breed certain species I guess (though I'm unsure of this myself). It's basically just a 40 gallon but has more depth and width to it as opposed to height. I'm not breeding anything, I just liked the size of it. If you look up the dimensions of it you'll understand what I'm trying to say. It's different than a typical 40 gallon.

BTW $10 isn't bad, at my lfs they go for $15. Also pricey is dependant on availability, sis just paid $70 for a rare-by catch eel, they only had 3.
Agree, $10 is a good price. My LFS had them last fall at $18 ea

So I did an 80% water change earlier today using the same exact process I've used ever since I started my tank almost 4 years ago. Well this evening I noticed I lost about 14 fish so far. The only things I can think of:

Prime really does expire possibly?? I've read online that it doesn't have a shelf life. Plus there's no expiration date on the bottle. I've had this one bottle for a while now

    Or

The thermostat I use to test water temp out of my faucet is broken causing a huge temp difference.

    Or

A drastic change in my tap water??

Only my shrimp, snails, and sterbai are all in tact. The only species in my tank that didnt lose at least one.

I'm at a loss. This sucks.

Wow, sorry for your large losses. For that many to go that quickly it sounds like some contamination either through the source water or some other way, or as you suggested, drastic water temp issue. But do you check temp also by hand? I always just check water temp by hand and don't use a thermometer and often go a little cooler rather than warmer. According to Seachem, Prime does not expire: https://www.seachem.com/support/foru...m-prime-expiry

Is 80% your usual water change and are you still doing this much weekly? If not, maybe this change was just too drastic? I've been stretching mine out to 2-4 weeks and do just about 50%. My routine is not for everyone, but works for my tanks.

I hope you can determine what might have gone wrong so it could be corrected if possible.

I've been doing around 80% every two weeks, so that's nothing new.

Sorry for the huge loss, that's awful

It is imperative that you match the tap water temp with the tank water temp when doing WC's, I found out the hard way, killed 4 fish within a matter of minutes by using tap that was too warm....for this sudden huge loss you had, I'm betting that's what happened

The sudden temp gradient change supersaturates the tank water with gasses that cause multiple internal problems with the fish

I guess I need to re calibrate the little thermometer thing that I use. Or buy a new one. I've never had a problem with it until now.
