"Gouramis do not need their water to be in good condition as they are atmospheric air breathers"----absolutely untrue, gouramis need good water conditions like every other fish. They need a varied diet, as well.

"I warn if you decide to put Barbs in the tank, that they not only nip fins quite a bit, but they also create unnecessary competition for food."
----wrong, only Tiger barbs are known fin nippers, and that is usually the result of having too few in the tank.

"a few species fave been known to nip fins- particularly Neons"---I've never heard of neons being nippy

I'm about to order some zebra otos. It will be my first experience with otos so I'm a little nervous but I can't wait to experience them!! I've heard nothing but good things about them. I know they need a mature tank which is why I've held off on getting any until now.
Glad everyone is well, and the fish aren't giving you any trouble. Zebra otos, that's neat! We will definitely need some pics once the otos are in the tank. So long as you have lots of goodies for them to eat (algae/auwfuchs)and they have been treated well during the catch/ship/hold time you should be fine. You can supplement with zucchini, melons, lightly blanched leafy greens like romaine and mustard. Thing Matt got his otos on greenbeans.

Never heard of aufwuchs. Do you have a good brand you recommend?

And for veggies, do I need to blanch them all before entering them into my tank? Just blanch them in normal tap water? Or in dechlorinated tap water?

aufwuchs is this another term for what grows in your tank play the bacteria that grows on your Driftwood or as you put leaves in your tank the bacteria and other micro Crustaceans that grow and break down the leaves. As for the vegetables I usually put in zucchinis Raw, I think Matt used to blanch his green beans. I never blanched my leafy greens. Unless I was trying to catch snails, to them it's like decaying plant matter when it's blanched. I'll even put raw sweet potatoes in or winter squash for my plecos and leave it in overnight sometimes even 24 hours depending on how thick the piece of sweet potato is.

I heard somewhere that Otocinclus catfish (assuming that's the topic of conversation) are social, so I think you would be good with at least 3-5 in the tank. What size did you have? Has this already been covered how many Zebra otos you need in a tank? I've never heard of Zebra Otos, but I have heard of Otocinclus catfish better known as Dwarf suckers. WHat species are you talking about here?

    I'll be getting 8 zebra otos. I have a 40B tank.

The species is called otocinclus cocama.

I'd say $10 per fish is kinda pricey...your thoughts? You really think 8 isn't enough?
