I use the 100% poly batting from Wally World, ditched the sponges in the HOB's long ago, IME, they were a PITA to wash, and they took up valuable space where I could place more ceramic media.

I change the poly once a week, when doing WC's and rinsing my media...I buy the large roll for 6-$8, and it lasts a LONG time, so being that it is cheap, I choose to replace it every week.

When/if it gets too blocked with debris?
Well like slap said the poly fiber from wally world is very inexpensive so thats one reason to replace it sooner then later. But the biggest indication would be the water flow slowering down

If you are using a sponge as your BB media then you shouldn't have to replace it if you maintain it -unless the sponge begins to break down, or is so clogged it is beyond cleaning (which shouldn't happen if you have good maintenance). If you do have to replace it that may become a problem so hopefully you have a backup BB sponge to use while the replacement becomes colonized .

Filter floss isn't used for BB media-its mechanical so many just toss it when cleaning. You can tell as the floss is white and when its bad it brown or even black. If you are using a sponge for mechanical media-then so long as you clean it of the majority of the debris in it-then even if it is discolored but free of most of that loose debris you can use it again IME. I do that with the Eheim's that I have some coarse and fine "sponge" that I will usually get 3 uses out of; so about 3 months-before I have to replace them because I feel that I can't rinse them enough to get them clean enough.

If you reuse your sponges for mechanical filtering and you notice nitrAtes are consistently high even after WC-its time to ditch the sponges and get new ones cause they aren't clean enough.

I don't use the AC sponges anymore, I cut small squares from blue bonded mat for filtering and replace that with every filter cleaning-about every 2 weeks now.

    I hope this makes sense...

Thanks Slap for your answer. I think I'll ditch those sponges as soon as I use up the ones I just bought! I'm using the same type roll-floss in other tanks with bio (eheim stratum or aquaclear bio-bags).

Totally makes sense, tx. I feel the same way about the sponges. I think I should be swapping my floss more often however. I rinse it clean, but I guess why not just replace it.

You can even stick some plastic pot-scrubbers in your filter and use them to grow bacteria on-just rinse them in tank water when you do your cleaning, it is very inexpensive. If you want something more "official" buy some lava rock-smaller the better and put them in the tank. Seachem matrix is a bacteria media that is just a porous "lava" rock.

Plastic pot scrubber (should be in grocery stores, dollar stores, Wall-mart...etc. even Amazon sells them)

You can get these online too, or at fish stores...fluval sells them as outlet covers-but they will work as well

Here is the Seachem Matrix, matrix close up and a lava rock for comparison. You can get small lava rocks at hardware stores-about 1/2-1" in size. just rinse under tap water to remove dust before you put them into you r media bag or directly in the filter.

If you have the entire AquaClear filter, you should also have the little bag of Biomax that came with it. It comes in a plastic sleeve and looks like rounded little rocks. Do you see that?
