I have a plastic hood with cut outs available for filters, heaters and wires and things. I can cut out whatever i need, if i need to get a bigger filter or add another filter.

I would definitely add another filter...AquaClear is a very good brand, you could put an AC30 or even an AC50 on that tank

When I first started out , before I learned better, I took my water sample to the pet store. They used liquid tests but they tole me my tank was fine because ammonia, nitrites and nitrAtes were all zero. They kept insisting that my tank was cycled....well it wasn't and my Platys starting dying.
My lesson learned....fishless cycle and do not add fish until the cycle is complete. I just don't trust the pet store's fish department anymore. Research and patience.

I had the same experience, but they used the test strips. I hope you get through this without too much trouble.
