That looks like a nice, true, flat surface, in which case the foam board isn't absolutely necessary...but if you want it, use it!

Thanks for that. I'm letting my phone rest (it gets 'overworked' and starts going a little batty) and then I'll show y'all that too. Assuming I can get it to show with the (phone) camera.

Thanks! It's for looks only, just so we aren't looking at the pink insulation edge. We're going for more of a 'blend in with the tank trim' effect.

It is one of those 'distressed' pieces of furniture, so I'm not too sure about the top of it. I'll try to get a better photo and show it, but basically, the top has all these little divots.

I can never quite tell how my photos have turned out while viewed on the phone. I use the phone (and tapatalk) to post photos here, then come to the computer to have a look. Sorry for some of the very poor quality photos.

In that case, I think the foamboard is a good idea, then...certainly can't hurt anything

He and I searched for and found this several months back. At that time, we really thought this would be a 20L, but it still works out.

    http://www.bigalspets.com/wizard-castle-large.html

He has read the Harry Potter series (more than once) and is a HUGE fan.

We had to do quite a bit of sanding for the edges of some of those passageways, but I'm happy overall. Most important of all though: He is happy about all this.

Nice, I'm glad you were able to keep your tank as well as start this one. Question though, how often do you open the windows? You probably know this already, but just make sure the temperature doesn't fluctuate too much and be wary of how much sunlight the tank will get if you don't have enough plant to balance out algae.

Looking forward to see what you will paint in this picture.
Think with logic and rationality more than emotion. Act with moderation and consideration. Contemplate ideals and realistic goals and weigh out possibilities and options. Temper not with personal delusions or false hope but learn to accept and move on.

Thank you, Spardas. This used to be our study and when it was, I opened the window shutters daily. The windows have those solar screens on them. We re-arranged our home a bit to give each child their own bedroom and this room became our son's bedroom. He doesn't open the lower shutters at all.

I appreciate your words of caution regarding the temp. I already battle heat in my 40B. We will keep an eye on it.

I've also been thinking about the algae... His plan has always been 'as many plants as he can fit' -- and he does want the live plants, not plastic.

Question for y'all about substrate: Would something like eco complete contribute to the unwanted algae growth?

The phone is working again, so I thought I'd bring this thread up to date. (Nearly there, promise!)

This is the view of the painted back, from the front side. It was still in the garage for this pic. It may be difficult to orient yourself for this view, but it is looking down through the open top. The reflection of the front of the tank is seen off the back glass.

The paint is not smooth and it is visible. I'm not sure if I should just continue onward as is or if I should attempt to get the paint off and redo it. Family is in favor of moving forward, as is.... Although hub hasn't seen it unwrapped yet. Son says we can just "cover the back in plants". He wants some growing out of the tank, as well as some aquatic plants.

    I'm open to painting suggestions.

Here is the tank, where it will set:

oh, thank you for saying so, labagility.
I've been trying to get a good pic of the back -- through the front -- but the glare is horrid and you can't make anything out.

I turned the entire tank around, since it is sitting empty, and snapped a photo of the back.

It looks really bad from this side, but perhaps not too bad from the front. Hopefully someone else will learn from my error and stop painting when I should have.

It does not look bad at all from the front, I'm looking forward to following you and your son's progress ;-)
