It's a testimonial to their toughness that they both survived that early fishkeeping period when you didn't know all you needed to know. Since then, it sounds like they've had wonderful lives in an appropriate environment with exactly the right care. For fish to live that long, conditions need to be proper for them, and they also need to acclimate well, which yours obviously did. Healthy stock, good maintenance and diet, and a real appreciation of them all contributed to their longevity. Congratulations for doing a fine job with their upkeep.

How large did they get? I understand that Silver Dollars are the peaceful counterparts to Piranhas. They do resemble them.

I wish I had taken a recent pic. But I'd say about 4"-5". This one was a little more elongated than the first one who was more round. Here's an older pic - maybe you can get some perspective. It's a 40B tank. The one on the left was the first one to go about a year ago.

I had a Synodontis eupterus that was more than 20 years old when it died, and a few whiptail cats that seem to live similarly long lives, though they were most likely w/c adults to start with. Did you grow your silver dollars out from small ones? Size doesn't matter to them, or even species for that matter. They'll all school together IME, I'd add at least a couple young ones so the surviving old one isn't so alone.

The 2nd one just died a couple of days ago, hence my updated post. Both of these were very small when first purchased years and years ago and started out in just a 26g tank (I knew very little then). They startled so easily, they would often bash into the tank wall and sometimes injured their mouths. They were moved several years ago to a 40b and the bashing stopped and they healed up well. As I began to learn more over the years I knew I didn't want more for a couple of reasons - I would not have a tank large enough for a proper school and they liked to mow down many plants. You can probably tell in the pic above, when I first moved them to the larger tank I used all silk plants and just one large anubias from their original tank. Gradually I began to add some java fern which they left alone and some crypts, some of which they also left alone. But any stems I tried like vals were quickly consumed.

I actually wanted to rehome them a long time ago but as they were some of my son's first fish, he was reluctant to let them go. So I think they lived a pretty decent life with their other tetra friends.
