    Default goldfish with ich

my common goldfish have sadly gotten ich. can I tread it with just salt and it medicine or I do I need heat? They are in room temp water. Im worried adding heat along with all of this would stress them more.

First of all, can we get more information?

Tank size, tank setup, other inhabitants, water parameters? Do you have a heater? What's the temperature at now? 70 F?

You can start the heat treatment if you have a heater and start increasing the temp up by like 2 degrees every 1-2 hours to let your fish adjust to it. Raise it up to 86 degrees and maintain high level of dissolved oxygen in the water.

it's a 50 gallon with 3 common goldfish. I had introduced plecos that brought in the ich but they are gone now. temp is at 70 f. no live plants. I took the carbon out of my canister filter for treatment. ph is at 7.5, ammonia is .25, usually the ammonia is at 0. I do have a heater I can use, can I use it along with the ich guard? I also have never used salt until now

I posted this for someone else for ich with their goldfish. I hope this will help you out. This is how I've dealt with ich every time it rears its ugly head.

Primafix is great for fungal infections internal and external. you can use them both at the same time.

The ich. First step throw that over the counter stuff out. IMHO they're junk and never work. They just screw with your water and your fish. I've killed fish with it, turned tanks a rainbow of colors, (I have a tank that the silicone is still friggin blue after 5 years) and killed off bio filters.

Salt and heat. I've done this with pretty much every tank I have at some point and it's always worked. I've done this with everything from cichlids, angels, goldfish to discus. No problems.

quick take on ich. its a parasite. those cyrstals are like little eggs. a lot of the meds out there treat the fish. The eggs fall off and land in the gravel but doesn't kill them. it just makes the fish a not so nice thing to attach to. Salt and heat will not only clear the fish but it will destroy the crystals in the gavel and on the décor.

First thing is raise your tank temp to 88-90* slowly over the next 24-36 hours. just add a few degrees every 4 hours or so until you hit the temp. Key is slowly and you're fish will be fine. They can handle quite a bit of heat with no ill effect. but they key is SLOW.

Second is add salt. Basically what we're doing is turning your tank a bit brackish for a little while. Don't worry this will not hurt your fish. They wont be thrilled but it wont hurt them. Use API aquarium salt or non iodine kosher salt. I highly suggest the API. Kosher salt is a last resort but it will work. DO NOT USE NORMAL TABLE SALT! The iodine in it will hurt and probably kill your fish.
Add 1/4 tablespoon per gallon every 6 hours for 24 hours. So 4 doses total. So for example, for a 10g tank you're adding 2 1/2 tablespoons every 6 hours. The best way to add it is dissolve the salt in a separate container first then pour it into the tank. Once you've added the 4 doses let it sit for 24-36 hours. At this point the fish should be cleared up or pretty close.
Once the tank has sat for 24-36 hours do a 25% water change. Do another 25% water change for the next 3 days. On the 5th day do a 50% water change and a really really good gravel clean. By the end of the 50% water change the salt will be out of your tank. Do NOT do huge water changes to get the salt out quickly like I know you want to. Take your time and change the water slowly so your fish can readjust to the water. like temps, too fast will hurt them.

Now back to heat. When you start doing water changes, on the second 25% change start bringing the temps back down. Bring it down a few degrees with each water change. So by the time you get to the 50% water change your temps should be back to normal. Something to remember, when you add water back to the tank make sure its at the temp of the tank at the time. So if it's 88* make sure the water you add is also 88*. If you add normal temp water you'll cool the tank to quickly and run the risk of shocking the fish. So pay attention to the temps.

Some preventive things to think of. DO NOT use anything that touches this tank in any other tank until you clean it. Period! Nets, hoses, hands... nothing. To clean everything all you really need to do is rinse it really well in stupidly hot water. As for your syphon hose just let hot water run through it for 5 minutes or so. this will flush the hose of any ich crystals. if you do not clean your gear and wash your hands you run the risk of adding ich to your other tanks. Take the steps!

The key to this is take your time. Do not rush through. You will probably see your fish flashing (rubbing) on the gravel or decor. That's ok, they're just itchy, not flipping out.

Like I said I've done this with just about every tank I have at some point. I've never had a loss from doing it. But I cant stress enough to take your time with it and follow this to the letter.

    Best of luck!

There we go, Jaster got you covered. Would've been a lot of typing for me, haha.

Did you already dose with medicine? Is that why you removed the carbon? I'd put the carbon back in if you didn't dose any medication.

you only need meds if your fish is hurt or sick. if it's just ich I wouldn't bother with the meds.

Ok. They are laying on the bottom of the rocks most of the day. They will come up to eat but only about 1/4 of what they normally eat and swim back to the bottom. They try and scratch on everything. When they were healthy they would never sit still
