I've never qt'd before either but given how many issues I had with the Lampeyes in the past, I'm really not willing to gamble right now. The 12 I bought have been doing so well (knock on wood) so I want to be sure anything I add is healthy first. What about algae wafers? I have those but not sure if they are a suitable substitute for the real thing.

I think you could grow algae on small rocks in a jar of water or small tank near a window and place them in qt tank?

Algae wafers may work, but they're no substitute for the real thing...I would probably try those and fresh veggies together, that may be what I do when/if I can find some otos...I usually buy them locally from the box stores, but haven't seen any in a while, mainly because i tend to stay out of the box stores, lol...I have my daughter look when she goes

Otos love veggies almost as much as algae, IME

This is actually a very good idea and probably fairly easy to do.

Yes, my Otos in the past never turned down veggies. They do have Otos at the lfs here but because it's a box store, I would feel much better qt-ing anything I bought from there.

Happy Thanksgiving Monday (in Canada)! I'm still stuffed from all the food my family and I devoured yesterday but I found a little surprise in my tank today!

Thanks Matt. Omg.. we had so much food! Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, carrots, buns and of course pumpkin pie with whipped cream. We already had leftover turkey sandwiches for lunch. The leftovers should keep us fed for a good few days! As good as the food was, I was thankful to have my family here even more. Just wish my daughter could've come but she is in university and was scheduled to work all weekend.

Pretty stoked to have Lampy fry already. The water here is definitely better than the last town we were in. Now we'll see if they can make it to adulthood. So far, I only count 2 but the eggs can hatch days apart. I have no idea where they laid the eggs because I have checked the mop I put in there and there's nothing.

Oh wow, I didn't know Canadians had pretty much the same menu on TG that those like us down below do...I'm so sheltered, lol.

I have a great recipe for leftover turkey bits, I always use chicken...it's a broccoli/cheesy/mushroomy thing, I can PM you the recipe if you wish

It's so neat that you get to play with new source water params now, I bet you have lampys galore in a few months...envious of that, I so loved them when I had them...not a flashy, brightly colored fish, but the eyes make up for it all...as does their behavior...such a boisterous little fish

Yeah, the menus are very similar. My cousin is Canadian but has lived in Utah for about 20 yrs. His wife is American so they celebrate TG for both countries!! Can you imagine getting to have such a wonderful feast 2 months in a row? My waistline could not handle that. Then Christmas in December.. oh boy! I would love your recipe please.. always looking for good ones.

Yes, it is nice to have the water we do here. It's very clean and cold.. haha. Hopefully I'll get enough fry to keep up my stock and perhaps sell a few. You should definitely get more lampys one day. They are so deceptively beautiful.. and bold!
