Gar - Multiple support boards on diy stand? Or in the floor? (i.e.doubling of floor joists, etc.)

Thanks Slap for the information and link.

It would be in your floor, if you look in the basement (if you have one?) and its unfinished you can see the joists. When I upgraded from a 55 to 75 and was questioned on the support abilities of the floor by family members I read up on it and when in question it stated that outside walls are better than inside walls, also that placing the tank across multiple joists is better then running parallel to the joists.

Sorry if you knew this already...I didn't.

Maximum structural support if the tank is perpendicular to the joists, stronger near outside /loadbearing walls. Makes life much easier...

    Congrats on the new setup!

I built this stand for my dual 29s, an excellent stand for any size tank. Just build it a bit longer, with added cross supports top & bottom. Build with 2x6s for the top and bottom rectangles, all other boards are 2x4s. For extra stability you can attach extra 2x6s around the bottom. And I agree, place the tank perpendicular to the floor joists if possible. If it must go parallel, you can place the stand on two 3/4" thick pieces of plywood.

Your two AC110s are fine for a 100 gal if not overstocked (I have two on my 75 gal). To keep nitrates low, don't use the AC sponges. Instead use 100% polyester quilt batting (poly-fil) in the bottom, then fill with biomedia. The extra biomedia will be way more beneficial than the sponges. Replace the poly-fil weekly. It's easier to replace the poly-fil (especially in an AC) than trying to rinse the sponges clean.

Thanks for the replies! (I know little to nothing about load bearing rules)

The spot I have for the tank is an outside wall, although the joist are running parallel.
The tank will be sitting across #2 parallel joists(2x10). Gronlaura, I'm not sure or understand how adding the x-tra plywood on bottom of stand will help out?

Would doubling these two floor joists work? Would bridging between joists work?
Or would adding posts under these in basement? (tho not a great option

Adding the plywood under the stand will distribute the weight of the tank across the floor more evenly...you'll be fine

The plywood also adds strength to the floor. It provides a more sturdy surface for the stand to sit on in case it ends up sitting between the joists and not on them. I have a very sorry excuse for a floor and my 75 and dual 29 gal stands sit on 1-1/2" of plywood. My 75 gal stand is a super heavy duty shelving unit with four 1-1/2" angle iron legs - about 225 lbs on each leg.

You also will need a piece of pink foam insulation cut to fit between the stand and the tank to protect the glass bottom from any imperfections or high spots in the wood. It comes in 1/2, 3/4 and 1" sizes. I used the 1" as I wanted to raise the tank up a bit. You don't need a wood top for the stand (unless you want one) as the tank frame is supported by the top 2x6 rectangle.

I don't have any exp. with a tank that long , that's why I said use 2x8 but if others say 2x4's will work that's what i would go with . What the others are saying about the direction of floor joists is very important because of the weight of a full tank and stand . A whole sheet of plywood 1/2"-3/4" ( 4'x8') with the stand centered on it would be safe , IMO. With stand centered like that all weight is spread out . I really hope that helps at least a little bit .If possible the plywood should span over at least 2 floor joists for greatest support .If floor joists are 2foot on center then you could use plywood ripped to 32inches which shouldn't interfere with couch legs , just saying .
ask ?'s and change some water pair of JD's and loving it.
