Are there any good tank mates for a betta? or maybe females? my daughters want my old 10gal and want to know if anything actually works well with them in that small of an environment. and how many? are females a better idea? thanks

Bettas can be tricky, some are as mellow as can be, others are aggressive and want to fight everything in sight.

A single male betta and a snail would work...a betta and shrimp *might* work, though some bettas see shrimp as nothing but snacks

I keep a single male with pygmy corys and chili rasboras and shrimp...but he is an extremely docile betta.

You could have a "harem" of a few female bettas, but do not mix males and females together

yeah i have heard several rasboras can work. i would want these first correct? and are they happy in that space? they prefer larger groups? And i know to keep the males/females apart. I have had a couple males in the past and one was mellow and one was not. but i have never kept females. i have also heard that a heram is also hit or miss.. depending on their temperaments. Why do Bettas have to be so intense! hahaha
I also heard that tetras (neon, cardinal) are good but they just aren't hardy enough in my opinion.... I really dont want to deal with Ich....

Many of the nano fish would work, but like I say, it's a crapshoot with a single male betta...there as many betta personalities as there are betts themselves!

Tetras are one of the most hardy fish you can keep, in an established cycled tank, but neons and cards need a bit more room than a 10G can provide...not sure I'd try ANY tetra in a 10G

what would you recommend in a 10gal. It's empty besides a some java fern floating around, and few small rocks (about 2in) from my 20gal in hopes for some bacteria quicker. lol.
its for a 6 and 10 yr old. so hardy and simple! LOL

What's it going to be filtered with?...if you over filter, your choices are a bit broader

    I use this on my 10G: http://www.amazon.com/AquaClear-30-P...s=aquaclear+30

haha thats my favorite filter. i have a 50 on my 20gal. lol (thought it was a 30gal initially) and i had another 50 that quit.. after just a couple months :( still mad. maybe fixable? i was pretty upset.

i think its an api superclean 20gal? hers is at her dads. she had a little 1 gallon with a glowfish tetra that passed the day before i gave her the 10gal. (thank goodness poor fish.. i really didn't want to move him i dont care for the dyed fish) and he looked terrible.. eyes popped out.. never seen that in a tank. but she wants it at his house. probably because i already have tanks here.

so i have had it cycling there and will check on it/change water when we switch off.

    I see.

How often did you clean the 50 that died?...you need to do monthly maintenance, or they'll gunk up and quit working...but it's easily remedied with a little TLC, every 4 weeks or so...the old one may be salvageable, but not sure how bad it was gunked up and has since dried up

Really, if she could live with a betta and a snail, that would be very easy, especially since you can't keep an everyday eye on the tank...mystery or nerite snails are pretty cool, haven't met a child yet who doesn't like them

I'm raising a 5G full of mysterys right now to sell, if you were close you could stop by and grab a few

Here's a few of the babies (pea sized) in the 5G

Here's one of the purple beauties from that same tank, growing up fast in my 10G

I heard they were cleanable. but i didnt see how i could really do anything. sounded like the motor may have quit. little bit of noise. but i haven't messed with them enough to know good/bad sounds lol. so i guess i let it gunk up too long.. it was hardly old enough to even need a change. but I may have gone a month too long on the first media change. was surprised that did it in though. it was also from amazon. and i wonder sometimes if i got the legit product. anyway, i still love that filter! and yeah.. its dried up. dang it! LOL. well. guess i have to learn the hard way sometimes. of all the things i ask in forums.. i didnt ask how to fix that..
