So about an hour before my timer cuts my light off I noticed my GBRs doing something odd. They have been hanging in one corner of this tank for quite some time, I don't have much of a setup for them to breed, I'm running a high temp in the tank due to an ich outbreak. (88-90F) I've kept everything normal, feeding schedule, ferts, cleanings, etc. Anyway back to my rams, the back right corner of my tank, where the water is most calm, and the intake pipe is for the canister filter I have a few mystery bulbs and two pieces of driftwood. My GBR's were acting normal, and when I look over they are cleaning the area and were very very close together, they are quite young, I wouldn't think they're older than 6 months or so, but I managed to grab my phone and take a video of the "strange" behavior, anyone seen this before?

all help is appreciated so put in your

    -E

Edit: after watching the video, you can't see it very clearly but they're rubbing their stomachs into the substrate and picking at it very quickly and swishing their tails over it. Not something I've seen before, sorry for the crappy video, I was trying to film it without them noticing me.

I've never had them, but I'll take a shot in the dark and say they're preparing to breed

I was about to say, I've seen breeding videos of them and this definitely fits the behavior I witnessed.

Looking at getting some myself for my community tank.

Yep, looks like pre-spawing behavior clearing a spot..they will start guarding the area soon. that will give it away also. Guess that definitely lets you know there paired up

    Is it the back corner?

Wow, especially at this temp. I did not see that happening any time soon. I did notice the male not allowing the Betta to come near the area while they were periodically nipping at the substrate. (nothing aggressive like nipping, mostly charging, and turning sideways with his fins poking out the betta is actually pretty relaxed, no flaring or anything) AmazonJoe - its the back right corner, unfortunately right next to the intake pipe for the xp3 but that's on them lol, and if this is pre-spawning behavior then I would imagine they're going to fail a few times as mentioned in other articles.

    Thanks for your input everybody!

Its the water temp thats got me like

but whatever...I mean I wanted them to have a productive relationship and get along, if they spawn its just an added bonus.

Lights are off now, and since I'm on a rotating work schedule, and my lights are not, I will be gone before they cut on and come home after they're off tomorrow might have to try to come home on my lunch break and see whats what. I'll let everyone know what winds up happening.

    thanks for the help!

Thanks for the compliment, I love having them, definitely an awesome cichlid to keep if you ever get the chance, so entertaining, and eye catching, and if you want to keep a planted tank like me and don't want your fish rearranging everything on their own (although my red devil did that and I have to admit it was entertaining). they're perfect!

    thanks again

Altima: Haha, they ARE getting ready to breed! I love GBRs and yours have gorgeous colours! I think that's a pretty good vid, especially for a phone, thanks!

I keep and have bred their colour morph cousins, EBRs, and I know you are going to have little babies soon.

Ok. Get yourself a flat rock, like slate, and lay it out (in the corner where they are picking) flat on the substrate. I have NEVER seen eggs so small for a cichlid! They may get lost in your substrate!

Next, cut up a cheap fish net, and cover the intake tube of your filter with net mesh, secured with a cheap tie wrap. Get yourself a fine enough net (or pre-filter) and those babies will not get sucked up. I've seen metal pre-filters for sale too, they just fit over your intake.

Even if they DO get sucked up, they won't necessarily expire. If you see any little, little fish swimming in your HOB (if you see them), save them!

    Good luck!
